It was completed in 1926, and in 1928 it was being used by 22 trains a day: 14 Yazoo & Mississippi Valley (IC), six Gulf Coast Lines (MP) and two Texas & New Orleans (SP) trains. Passenger service on the Espee ended around 1931 and on the IC in 1950, but MP trains ran until 1967. The building was subsequently acquired by the City of Baton Rouge and leased to the Louisiana Arts and Science Center (now the Louisiana Art and Science Museum).

Description:  This Illinois Central depot at Baton Rouge was completed in 1926, and in 1928 it was being used by 22 trains a day: 14 Yazoo & Mississippi Valley (IC), six Gulf Coast Lines (MP) and two Texas & New Orleans (SP) trains. The building was subsequently acquired by the City of Baton Rouge and leased to the Louisiana Arts and Science Center (now the Louisiana Art and Science Museum).

In 1975-76 LASC set up a display train next to the station consisting of IC 0-6-0 333, IC RPO car 95, Southern Railway coach 1064, IC dining car 4112 and IC office car 4. The locomotive and diner were owned by the museum; while the RPO, coach and office car were leased from the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Over time, the train fell into disrepair; and in 2000 the museum decided to get rid of it. In late 2006 the three NRHS cars were moved to Hammond, Louisiana and diner went to the Monticello Railroad Museum in Illinois. The 0-6-0 is suppose to go to Tioga, Louisiana; but as of early 2010 it hadn't been moved.

High Water Along the ICG
Title:  High Water Along the ICG
Description:  At downtown Baton Rouge, the ICG/IC/CN runs right on top of the Mississippi River levee. The river is normally a long way from the railroad; but during this unusually high river stage the water was literally lapping at the ends of the ties, and some local folk have come out to take in this unusual view. The tall building on the right is the Louisiana State Capitol.

UTC Dome
Title:  UTC Dome
Description:  In 1956 the Union Tank Car Company began to design a revolutionary tank car maintenance shop which would be constructed along the Kansas City Southern “D” Line at Alsen, just north of Baton Rouge. The shop would be enclosed in a geodesic dome 384 feet in diameter and 128 feet high; and when it was completed in October 1958, it was the world’s largest clear-span structure. The main feature of the shop was a circular transfer table which served 30 maintenance positions; and the design was considered so successful that Union built a similar structure at Wood River, Illinois in 1961.

Unfortunately, the transfer table was designed for 1950-size cars, and it could not accommodate the longer cars which came along soon after it was built. Union sold the property to the Kansas City Southern in 1990; but the railroad was more interested in the land than the dome, which sat vacant and deteriorated. In November 2007, just one year before it would have been eligible for placement on the National Register of Historic Places, KCS obtained a demolition permit from the City of Baton Rouge and quickly razed the dome.
