INLX SC 42
Title:  INLX SC 42
Description:  This is a mystery locomotive, pictured on the Pielet Brothers ( scrapper ) setout track at La Grange, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The Unofficial EMD Home Page lists a model SC ( SC = Six hundred horsepower, Cast steel frame ) numbered INLX 42, built in June 1936 by EMC ( c/n 603 ). The paint matches a photo of GTW 7800 in The Second Diesel Spotter's Guide on page EMD 30. However, the paint also matches the two NC2 locomotives built for the MP, while the sandbox matches a half dozen MP model SC locomotives. Likely it was sidelined by availability of parts for the Winton 201-A diesel prime mover. If anyone has any further information, please leave a comment, thanks.

L&NW F7 44
Title:  L&NW F7 44
Description:  Louisiana & North West Railroad F7 44 at Gibsland, Louisiana on December 26, 1977, Kodachrome by Paul L. Strang, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from the book, Southern Pacific Diesel Locomotive Compendium, Volume 1, by Joseph A Strapac:

Number 44 was built in July 1952 ( c/n 16560 ) as SP F7 6379 ( SP Class EF415A-8 ), delivered without a plow pilot, receiving a plow pilot by February 1955, retired by the SP June 13, 1968. In 1968-69, the Wellsville Addison & Galeton Railroad in Pennsylvania began purchasing former SP and TN&O F7s from General Electric and Precision Engineering. Most were transferred to the Louisiana & North West Railroad ( an associated Salzberg property in Louisiana ) receiving new numbers there. L&NW 44 and 47 ( SP 6379 and 6309 ) were sold - 5/90 to Excursion Rails, Inc. becoming Texas Special 100 and 200 ( Dinner Train operating between Houston and Galveston ). Stored in 2002 at the Center for Transportation and Commerce in Galveston.

The book indicates that number 44 may have gone to the Golden Gate Railroad Museum ( GGRM ), Hunter's Point, San Francisco. However the GGRM web site indicates that L&NW 46 ( ex-SP 6378 ) and 45 ( ex-SP 6380 ) are in their collection. I cannot find the present location of L&NW 44. Any help appreciated.

Iroquois Terminals SW 48
Title:  Iroquois Terminals SW 48
Description:  Iroquois Terminals Inc. SW 48 at Pielet Brothers (scrapper) in McCook, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I don't know anything about this locomotive except that it was either an EMC SW (six-hundred horsepower, welded frame) or SC (six-hundred hp, cast frame). The identifying features are the vents at the top of the hood and the sand box on the front. I believe it is number 48, based solely on the headlight. I pulled a closeup of just the headlight and uploaded it so you can judge for yourself. As best I can tell, this locomotive might have been built as Inland Steel (INLX) 43, the only record I can find so far of any locomotive going to the Iroquois Terminals. That record indicates the INLX 43 became Iroquois Terminals 43. There's the problem, I believe this is number 48. I think Iroquois Terminals was part of the Port of Chicago's operations. Until more information comes along, that's what I'll go with. Any help would be appreciated.

SWIS S6 244
Title:  SWIS S6 244
Description:  Sidney Warehousing and Industrial Sites Inc. (SWIS) 244 with oil containment issues at Sidney, Nebraska on February 20, 1984, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in June 1956 (c/n 81726) as SP 1055, renumbered in 1965 to 1222. It was retired in January 1976 and sold to Chrome Crankshaft. In September 1977 it was sold to SWIS and in February 1990 it was sold to Sidney & Lowe Railroad. The following is from the book, Comprehensive Guide To Industrial Locomotives Third Edition: The Sioux Army Depot was established in 1942 to manufacture and store ammunition. It closed in 1967 and was redeveloped by SWIS for private use. This S6 - still painted inwhat might be described as distressed SP gray and scarlet - provided the muscle for the rail service utility.

DTI SD38 251
Title:  DTI SD38 251
Description:  Detroit Toledo & Ironton Railroad SD38's 251 and 253 on the L&N bridge at Cincinnati, Ohio on an unknown date, slide by Phil Ragland, Chuck Zeiler collection. Other than the location and photographer's name, the plastic slide mount was unmarked. Number 251 was built in July 1969 (c/n 34864), later becoming GTW 6251. The DT&I was acquired by the GTW in 1980, and based on the condition of the locomotive, I guestimated the date around the summer of 1975.

DW&P RDC3 D-301
Title:  DW&P RDC3 D-301
Description:  Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific RDC3 D-301 at Duluth, Minnesota on an unknown day in June 1958, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number D-301 was built in 1956 (c/n 6602), becoming CN D-355 in October 1961. I will point out that it has a Railway Post Office (RPO) section, and to the left of the sign between the two baggage doors on the side is a small slot. One could put mail in that door, and it would be processed by the Post Office just like it was dropped in a mailbox. As a teen, I would drop a postcard into that slot (which was also on all RPO cars in the US) addressed to myself. The stamp would be cancelled by someone on the RPO, and that cancellation mark would have the train number recorded.

GB&W RS2 303
Title:  GB&W RS2 303
Description:  ex-GB&W RS2 303 on the C&NW at Proviso, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1950 as GBW 303 (c/n 77916), the purchase price was $142,694.00. At some date the air-cooled turbocharger was changed to a water-cooled version, changing the exhaust stack orientation from length-wise to cross-wise, as seen here. One source indicates this locomotive was sold to the Ann Arbor in 1979, and later it was sold to Rail Rebuilders (which may explain the RRB reporting marks), later moved to Lake Superior Railroad Museum. However, it appears that it now resides at Mineral Range, Inc., WSOR at Horicon, Wisconsin. Sometime during 1988 it was repainted to NYC 8203.
