KCS Bridge 1
Title:  KCS Bridge 1
Description:  KCS GP38-2's 4009 and 4001 power southbound train across the Red River Bridge into Alexandria. The train had 43 cars and no caboose. The bridge, which included a swing span, was built by the American Bridge Co. in 1901 for the Louisiana Railway & Navigation Co. The Kansas City Southern stopped using it in late January 1996, upon completion of a new high-level fixed bridge six miles south of here at Latanier; and it was dismantled in early April 1996.

The top of the station building can be seen behind the tree in the middle of the photo, while the freight yard is at the bottom of the bridge approach. The KCS stopped using this crossing of the Red River in late January 1996, upon completion of a new bridge six miles south of here; and this approach was removed by early June of that year.

KCS Yard 8
Title:  KCS Yard 8
Description:  This view was facing northeast towards the Red River, and Interstate 49 was behind me. The cleared area in the foreground was the former Southern Pacific yard, and this photo illustrates its proximity to the Kansas City Southern yard. KCS moved to a new yard at Latanier -- 10 miles south of here -- in mid-July 1990, and abandoned its main line through here in January 1996, after it completed a new bridge across the Red River south of here at Latanier; so now there is hardly any railroad activity here anymore. The Espee had abandoned its operation between Opelousas and Alexandria, 57.7 miles including 23.5 miles over the UP, in November 1984.
