Album Info:When I was growing up along these rails the MEC considered Bucksport one of their most productive branch lines. As the paper mill added paper machines in the late 60s and mid 70s traffic increased from one train 5 or 6 days a week to 2 daily trains seven days a week. Some winters pulp wood traffic pushed it higher. By the late 70s the paper mill was starting to handle tree length pulpwood by truck from their land holdings in Washington County which was bad for the Maine Central & the Calais Branch in particular. Not long after this the oil traffic from Webber Tanks ended as did the refined ore traffic trucked up from Cape Rosire, which at its peak amounted to 3 or 4 gondolas a week. Im out of touch with things these days, but it looks like traffic is running at one and occasionally two trains a day. /DL

BA2 waiting to depart
Title:  BA2 waiting to depart
Description:  MEC always used the old main line into Bucksport to tuck cars onto as they made up the train. Pan Am still does. Behind the camera the track now ends in about 200 feet away, years ago it went another 1/4 mile or so past the Bucksport station with a run around. In the 50s the morning train would run a baggage car with LCL freight down to the station then head back north (time table west) past St.Regis Paper to the turn table to turn the diesel locomotives. They did this all thru the 50s. /DL

BA2 setting in the yard
Title:  BA2 setting in the yard
Description:  The track in the foreground is the old team track. The track just in front of the waiting train used to have an old outside braced wood box car pushed into the dirt pile. It sat there for years and was used for trash and debris from around the yard. I dont' ever recall seeing it moved.

BA2 in the park
Title:  BA2 in the park
Description:  Bucksport has a rich history as a working water front. The remains of ship ways and a ferry were lined up here 100 years ago. The waterfront park and walk are new in the past 5 years. The RR station was just around the next bend just out of sight.
