Album Info:I decided it had been too long since i had visited the Hartwell Railroad, my last visit was in 2003 with a crappy film PNS. After chasing Q614 to Elberton i headed north along the line, right from the start of the line there were mile long strings of parked TTX spine cars. Not a good sign. I drove to Lavonia non stop, in hope of beating high sun. I was somewhat successful and found 3 shut down units. The 136, the ex-RF&P unit was mostly repaired from its collision with a spine car, and DRGW 3044 was parked next to it. Something was very wrong though, there was not a grain car to be seen anywhere. On the way i had passed Columbia Farms big new elevator in Comer, which will likely spell doom for this one in Lavonia. There were still trucks taking loads but it appears that rail service had ceased. What the Hartwell and the city of Lavonia will do without this major source of revenue is uncertain but it does not paint a bright future for either. After shooting the parked power in Lavonia i headed down to Airline. What i saw on the way there was rather disheartening, stretching all the way from the wye in Bowersville to Airline was a mile long string of stored cars parked on the original Hartwell Railroad. At Airline all i found was ex- BLE SD7 454, now essentially landlocked at what used to be the heart of the railroad. On the positive side the railroad has built a new Maintenance shed, but its for the company's MOW fleet, not locomotives, which get to sit outside instead. I checked in to the office, and found that no trains would be running today, with the economy in the toilet there is no need to run every day as was the case on my last visit. In Hartwell proper things are no better. The tracks around the depot are heavily overgrown, the remaining coach and the CofG caboose have been moved into the woods at the edge of town and exposed to the elements. The wooden CofG caboose seems to be deteriorating fast. After lunch in Hartwell i drove back towards Elberton in

Distasteful caboose
Title:  Distasteful caboose
Description:  Probably the worst looking caboose ive seen. Whats worse it was in RF&P paint before this. I wouldnt be complaining though if this train actually had a chance to run. Ive enetered the caboose as RFP since no new marks besides the number were present.

Description:  A Lavonia businessman had planned to start a gambling train service that would operate on the Hartwell railroad tracks. The train was to be called the "Mardi Gras express" and was painted these god awful colors in anticipation. The plan was shot down by the Lavonia local government. Not a smart plan, gambling brings revenue whether its the most desirable sort or not, which with the closing of the feed mill is something that will be sorely needed. Now the equipment sits with no clear future.
