Southern Railway roof-hatch box cars (AAR type LC) were easy to identify because of their yellow doors, and here was SOU 32419 in New Orleans on 2 October 1973. The lettering on its door read ROOF HATCH CAR FOR CLAY LOADING / ONLY RETURN PROMPTLY WHEN EMPTY / TO SOU RY OR C OF G RY AT ANY / JUNCTION PT FOR LOADING GORDON GA. Cars like this went to the American-Standard plumbing fixture plant which was located along the Southern on its main line in New Orleans. SOU 32419 had a CAPY of 154,000 pounds, a LD LMT of 165,700 and a LT WT of 54,300 for a gross rail load of 220,000 pounds, and was one of 20 cars in the 32415-32434 series. |
