Album Info:Photos taken in Muscatine, Iowa and some taken in Muscatine County, Iowa. Muscatine's first railroad was the Rock Island in the 1850s. Today, I am not sure if any trace of the former Rock Island exists. Later, the Milwaukee Road went through Muscatine on its line from Chicago to Kansas City. There was a Milwaukee Road yard near the Mississippi River. Later, following MILW's bankruptcy, the Soo Line took over this line and later the CP spun this line off to the Iowa Montana Rail Link. Today, this line is run by the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern but is in the process of being repurchased by the Canandian Pacific. There are also some UP run through trains on this line. Also in Muscatine County is the former Rock Island Chicago-Omaha line now run by the Iowa Interstate.

Description:  Two of Muscatine's best known houses appear on top of the hill - one is Queen Anne style from the late 19th Century. The other is a Greek Revival house from the mid 19th century. I believe that both were originally owned by riverboat captains. Along 2nd Street in Muscatine there are several more impressive late 19th Century houses as that was the neighbourhood where factory owners and riverboat owners lived at the time. Title:  Interesting Safety Feature and Muscatine's Last Button Factory
Description:  These fences are designed to prevent people from riding bicycles across the tracks without stopping and looking for trains (being right next to a train yard, it is necessary). The building is the last pearl button factory open in Muscatine. Muscatine is known as the Pearl City due to its former prominence in manufacturing pearl buttons using Mississippi River clams (really mussels). Pollution and overfishing ended this industry - especially when several of the species were declared to be endangered or threatened species. Today, this factory makes synthetic buttons using the same methods and machinery that the natural buttons were made with
