Mystery hulk
Title:  Mystery hulk
Description:  This one is a puzzler- it's what's left of a former Air Force GE centercab but the exact identity is unknown. The short cab height seems to suggest a drop-cab 45T; but other details, like the handrails, frame, battery area and even the odd brackets on the roof suggest it's something else, perhaps narrow gauge GE 47T 6000, which was reported as a being retired at Hill in the early '70s. Don Driscoll has a shot posted of USAF 6000 in operation at Stephenville Nfld in Aug 1961 while working the branch to the CN narrowgauge out of Ernest Harmon AFB. No.4000, sitting behind it, is the one-and-only standard gauge Davenport DE48.

One of a Kind Davenport
Title:  One of a Kind Davenport
Description:  During the Korean War the Army contracted with Davenport to build two multi-gauge 48ton locomotives as prototypes for possible use overseas. Narrow gauge 4700N proved to be a dead end, but standard and wide-gauge capable DE-48 4000 had potential, even if it weighed in at 60 tons. Concerned with the ability of Davenport to build more, they awarded the contract for 74 'production' units to Baldwin, who built them as RS-4-TCs at Eddystone under Whitcomb builder's numbers. The one-of-a-kind Davenport 'prototype' (as described in Army documents) is shown here prior to being scrapped at the Army's locomotive shop located on Hill AFB UT.

Army 4002
Title:  Army 4002
Description:  Army 4002 is an RS4TC, 74 of which were built at Baldwin-Eddystone in 1953 to a modified Davenport design and with Whitcomb builder's number. Built with a 400HP Cat D397 engine, at least 40 were rebuilt in the 1980s with 500HP Cat 3508 engines, the paired stacks forward being replaced by a single one aft and the radiator screens being plated over. Many would end up with industries and shortlines; 4002 currently resides at Prairie Village near Madison SD.

Description:  The Army's main locomotive shop for itself and the Air Force is located just south of Ogden on Hill Air Force Base. As of 1976 it was known as the Rail Equipment Divsion of the Tooele Army Depot. For years they kept a storage line that included over 40 units of six different makes- EMD, GE, AlCo, Davenport, Baldwin and Whitcomb. The military has since greatly reduced its fleet and sold or scrapped a good portion of their amazingly diverse inventory.
