No silver lining for The Rock
Title:  No silver lining for The Rock
Description:  This picture somewhat symbolizes the Rock Island in its later years to me. Driving across the Texas Panhadle parallel to the Rock Island's Amarillo to El Reno main on a cloudy day you spy a light in the distance and jump off the road to get the shot. It seems to take an awful long time to get to you- and you realize it's only doing about 25 to 30 MPH. The blue unit looks good but its a facade for the dirty maroon units behind; the track conditions are hardly befitting a 'mainline' and the cars sway as they go by. You get friendly waves from the Rock crews, as usual, but the scene confirms what you already know; that the road is in serious trouble. GP38-2 4338 is trailed by GP35s 321, 329 and U28Bs 269, 255.

Odd Unit on a Railroad Full of Odd Units
Title:  Odd Unit on a Railroad Full of Odd Units
Description:  ROCK 4421 idles at the road's Ft Worth yard in January 1979. It was delivered as GP18M 1239 by EMD in 1963, with some components from wrecked F7B 676B. One of three similar units on the RI, it had the standard GP18 grills but with four 36" fans of earlier Geeps. 1239 went through the Rock's capital rebuild program at Silvis in 1976 and emerged as a GP9; at least that's what RI called it.

SW1 with Blunt trucks
Title:  SW1 with Blunt trucks
Description:  Reynolds Aluminum (RMCX) 89 is a candidate for the "there's a prototype for everything" catagory; It's a former CNW SW1 (1274) with Blunt trucks, which are usually associated with AlCo S1/S2 type locomotives. The unit was reportedly acquired by the company in 1979; it's shown here on an SP spur during what appears to be a traction motor change.

Hallelulah and eight units
Title:  Hallelulah and eight units
Description:  A northbound SP train passes through Beeville enroute Houston in August 1972. This is serious flatland railroad territory, so anything more than three units can be considered unusual; seven big six axle motors is very odd and the Conrail U25B (2675) only makes this movement all the more notable.

Action, five units and foreign power
Title:  Action, five units and foreign power
Description:  Skidmore was a wide spot on the road in South Texas where three SP lines met. The tracks in the foreground headed for the Mexican border and the Rio Grande valley. SSW 7653, shown here with a B&O GP40-2, U33C and a pair of GP9s trailing, is bringing a train from Corpus Christi into the small yard. The route north headed about ten miles to Beeville, where they split again, with lines to Houston and San Antonio. All of this trackage came up in the 1990s, although there is some talk of KCS buying and re-laying the portion from Victoria to the south.
