The acquisition of a part of the former north-south Rock Island between Texas and Kansas by the MKT in 1980-81 led to the creation of the OKKT. The Katy leased a number of locomotives from Conrail to help move traffic on the 'new' line; here three CR GP38/38-2s and an MKT GP40 move a freight north at Kremlin OK. |

Rock Island depot, Ponca City |
Description: |
Ponca City Oklahoma is famous as the home of Phillips 66 Oil and the Santa Fe presence was always dominant, but it also was at the end of a 55 mile Rock Island branch that ran from Enid. The end of the line was marked by the road's mission-style depot on So. 3rd Street. The former RI depot at Ponca City OK. As of 1979 the line was covered by a tri-weekly turn out of Enid that was limited to a 10MPH speed limit. The route was operated by the North Central Oklahoma RR 1982 to 1983 and finally abandoned. |

Evidence of the Santa Fe |
Description: |
I have to admit; I love finding stuff like this. These abutments are what remains of one of the many ATSF branches that used to cover the midwest. In this case we're on US64 in Pawnee County OK and it's been 40 years since they carried railroad tracks across this road located east of the town of Pawnee. The 24 April 1966 Middle Division employee timetable lists this line as the Cushing District; which consisted of 133 miles of track from Newkirk to Shawnee. The BNSF's former Frisco Avard Sub still runs about a half-mile north of here; the Cushing Sub, however, was abandoned in 1975. |

Pawnee Depot |
Description: |
The former ATSF depot at Pawnee, OK, while looking east on a quiet Sunday afternoon. The BNSF still operates this short stretch of track, which is abandoned to the north. WAMX/Stillwater Central runs the line from the connection (about a half mile behind the photographer) to Stillwater. The BNSF's Avard Sub, the former Frisco main, is a block south. |
