The Ghost of the Rio Grande
Title:  The Ghost of the Rio Grande
Description:  The original D&RGW Mainline Thru The Rockies - the Tennessee Pass Route - lies dormant at Nathrop, CO, with the Collegiate Range to the left as we look north (railroad west) on a cool September morning in 2006. Slag ballast, ties and rail are intact--where's our black & Grande gold diesels?

San Luis & Rio Grande
Title:  San Luis & Rio Grande
Description:  Startled ravens take to the air as the SL&RG local rolls south on the former D&RGW Alamosa Branch. UP spun this line off with a cluster of other ex-Rio Grande branches, including the route over La Veta Pass. What a life the 453 has had--from Amtrak to Canadian-American to San Luis & Rio Grande!

Morning Train at Chama
Title:  Morning Train at Chama
Description:  C&TS (ex-D&RGW) Heavy Mikado #484 keeps the spirit alive in 2006! This is the western base of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR's operation over Cumbres Pass. It's a classy operation and a great family experience for those that aren't as hardcore as us action photographers!

BNSF Extra 986 East
Title:  BNSF Extra 986 East
Description:  An empty BNSF grain extra works east across the bridge at Canyon Diablo (about 40 cars back) on a beautiful, blustry autumn day in the desert. The remains of the town of Canyon Diablo are buried in the tall grass, accompanied only by lizards and insects--and the railroad. The Arizona Divide and San Francisco Peaks form the distant background.

BNSF M-STODEN
Title:  BNSF M-STODEN
Description:  BNSF M-STODEN, a trackage rights train over the former D&RGW mainline, rolls east off of Cedar Hill in the deserts of Eastern Utah. It's not Rio Grande, but at least it's orange! :-) U.S. Highway 6-50 is in the background.

Train 236...?
Title:  Train 236...?
Description:  A quick glace takes you back to the late 1970's or perhaps 1980's, and you're trackside on the Rio Grande, with train 236 rolling down Cedar Hill for points east. But the breeze in the desert can be deceiving--really, it's an autumn morning in 2006, with BNSF M-STODEN. But the scene? Pure Rio Grande.

The Last One
Title:  The Last One
Description:  She's been well-documented, but it's worth it! This is the last un-patched, original paint D&RGW locomotive on the UP Roster. The 'Grande is by far my favorite railroad, and I have many more slides of the last engines running around--I finally got one posted!

Still Earning Her Keep
Title:  Still Earning Her Keep
Description:  D&RGW SD40T-2 5371 leads the Dirt Train upgrade from Mounds, Utah, towards the ECDC Environmental dump site at Sunnyside, Utah. This was it--the last time I saw this engine earning her keep, the last time I was able to witness an engine of my favorite road, unbastardized, running live. She was retired in March 2008.

Across the Desert
Title:  Across the Desert
Description:  UP's catch-as-you-can manifest from Grand Junction, CO to Roper (Salt Lake City), UT, worms its way across the mud flats as it approaches the East Switch of Sagers Siding. The backdrop is the Uncompahgre Plateau over in Colorado, through which the train has just passed via Ruby Canyon. The train is a solid 3 miles away in this photograph.
