Florida TriRail 801 |
| Description: |
Morrison-Knudson F40PHL-2 shoving a mid-day train at the former Seaboard Air Line Hollywood Florida depot. 801 was rebuilt by combining the frame from Conrail GP40 #3230 with the cowls of two Burlington Northern F45s #6630 and #6637. The result really looks like an F45 until you gaze down at those B-B trucks. The UTDC bi-levels were bought to match GO Transit's as the service wasn't expected to last after I-95 improvements were done and they'd be easy to sell to GO. By 1990 this midday train was added. The trains are still running today. |

A "Work Extra" is seen from the East side of the tracks along SW 4th Ave. at about SW 2nd Pl. facing NW. We are just south of Stirling Road (SR-848). FEC used to get all of its MofW granite ballast from Norfolk Southern, hence the Southern and NS ballast cars. GP38-2 #508 was delivered in April of 1978. The Dania water tower dates back to 1945. |

| Description: |
Amtrak's Coast Starlight passes a railfan's dream house at the Channel Drive crossing. This neighborhood must be one of the wealthiest in the USA that is right up against a main line railroad. I was on a business retreat with my company staying in the Santa Barbara Biltmore, and had just enough time from when I heard a horn to run to the end of the parking lot and get a picture. This angle is from the bushes between the tennis court and the tracks. |

| Description: |
Built for the Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley Lines by American Car & Foundry in 1911, this interurban was brought to LA by the US Maritime Commision to work Calship Specials on the Shipyard Railway to the Calship Shipyard on Terminal Island. In 1945 it went to the Pacific Electric for use on the Southern Division to Long Beach, running out of the PE Terminal on 6th and Main. After the government takeover of PE it was the only "Blimp" to be painted LAMTA green. The parks dept has since repainted it without reapplying to logos. |

| Description: |
Built by the Southern Pacific, for the Southern Pacific, in their Sacramento shops in 1921. Used primarily as a switch engine in the yards, #1273 nevertheless logged 1,500,000 miles during it's 35 years of service. SP designated it a Class S-12. The "S" indicated Switcher Class. S-12s were constructed in both Sac and LA. There were a total of 38 built. It was donated to Travel Town in 1957. |

PE 1544 |
| Description: |
This one-of-a-kind, electric locomotive, called the "Electra", was built in 1902 by the North Shore Railroad in anticipation of electification of the line. "Electra" was built in NSR's Tiburon shops on the north shore of the San Francisco Bay. Its unique sloped ends were fabricated from steam locomotive tenders, wedged on either side of the cab, and filled with water on one end and sand for ballast on the other. Later used in 1925 to help build the Hollywood Subway, the "Electra" performed its last duty as a switch engine at P.E.'s vast Torrance repair shops, south of Los Angeles, until its retirement in 1952. |

| Description: |
Built by the Dickson Works subsidiary of ALCO in Scranton PA in 1902 as a 2-6-0 "Mogul" for Minnesota Land & Construction, #7 was then sold to Sharp Construction Company, who added a two-wheel trailing truck to turn it into a "Prairie." During the WWI, #7 served at Camp Kearney, San Diego, and during WWII it worked at Defense Ordnance at Fort Wingate, NM and the Navajo Ordnance Plant at Flagstaff, AZ. Sharp & Fellows, which dates back to 1877, is still a railroad contractor today. They donated this unit to the LA County Parks in 1954. |

| Description: |
ATSF 664 was built in 1899 by Baldwin. It has 57" drivers and 21" x 28" cylinders, and it weighs 70 tons. Originally numbered #891, this oil-burning locomotive was used exclusively for freight in Texas, Oklahoma, and surrounding states. It was still in active use when it was donated to Travel Town by Santa Fe in 1953. In keeping with Santa Fe's class system, being the first unit of this class, it is one of 45 Class 664 Consolidations. |

Can hardly tell that the SP has been folded into the UP for almost two years in this shot, as two fairly new bloody nose SD70Ms bring a manifest off the Coast Line through the Metrolink station. Delivered to th SP in June of 1994, these two units are the very first production SD70Ms (after the demonstrators). They were later renumbered 3795 and 3794 by Uncle Pete, for whom they soldier on today. |

Two rebuilt GP9us and a B23-7 drill in El Segundo. This short section of track here is actually the only remaining piece of the Redondo Branch west of the Harbor Sub. At one time, a train on this track could continue through Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach (on what is today a really skinny park). Even this shot cannot be taken anymore, as the mall/movie theatre to the right planted those trees, which today are taller then any train. |

Train 698 "The Northlander" from Cochrane pulls out of Union Station with an "EGU" and a string of Hawker Siddeley former GO Transit cars. The EGU is a former Milwaukee Road F9B (ex MILW 125D, 1985; x-MILW 128C). It was rebuilt in 1991 into a generator car. The GP38-2 was the last of ten Ontario Northland received, and was delivered in September of 1984. The corrugated cars were built for GO Transit when it began service in 1967 and extensively refurbished for ON service. |

Headed to Railfair'99 in Sacramento, the grand old Baldwin puts on the best steam show I'd ever seen, ripping through town at high speed. The train was officially BNSF OLACSAE13 RailFair'99 Special. #3751 was the ATSF's first ever 4-8-4 Northern (thus, the 3751 Class engine on Santa Fe), having been delivered by Baldwin Locomotive Works in May 1927. |

Travel Town was the brainchild of LA County Park's employee Charlie Atkins. In the 1950s, many local railroads donated steam engines to Travel Town, but over the years, the collection was put under the responsbility of those who didn't care about saving these artifiacts, simply allowing them to rust away. Today, things are vastly improved, as the city has changed Travel Town's focus from being a playground to being a museum. |
