Album Info:This line branches off of the CP's ex-Milwaukee Road main line through Wisconsin (Tomah/Watertown Subdivisions) at Portage and runs south to an interchange with the WSOR at Madison. It was one of the few Milwaukee Road lines to Madison to not go up for abandonment in the 1980s, and thus followed the natural progression MILW-SOO-CP, without being bought by the state and operated by a short line at any point. It is served by a local based out of Portage, usually M-W-F as of the late 2010s.

Probable M&P train, exact location unknown
Title:  Probable M&P train, exact location unknown
Description:  Dad took this photo back in July without noting the location. Based on the three Geeps with tank cars right behind the power on what appears to be light, jointed rail, I am assuming this is the M&P local.

Stranger in town
Title:  Stranger in town
Description:  It's easy to forget sometimes that CP also operates in Madison, since their line ends here, adjacent to the WSOR yard on the north side of town. Here the local G63 from Portage pokes its nose out from behind the trees, this is as far south as it will come before reversing to run around the train and shove it across the interchage track to the WSOR.

End of the line
Title:  End of the line
Description:  I'm standing on the sidewalk of E. Johnson Street, to my left, the two ex-C&NW tracks currently used by WSOR cross. This ex-Milwaukee Road track used to also cross the road and connect to MILW's main Madison yard at W. Washington Avenue, as well as their lines to Prairie du Chien and Janesville. WSOR still operates those lines, but uses the ex-C&NW yard and tracks leased from UP to access them.

CP 3017 leads a light power G64 as it arrives in the CP yard
Title:  CP 3017 leads a light power G64 as it arrives in the CP yard
Description:  Last Friday I grumbled that this unit wasn't leading southbound, and it was dark by the time they departed back north for Portage. Well, the power set was wyed sometime in the intervening week, so I got my wish! This time the local is light engine and will pick up a few cars off the WSOR interchange. There's also a string of over 100 sand empties for interchange to CP sitting in their yard, but this crew will leave those be. They were eventually picked up by a solo AC4400CW which came down on Sunday the 9th.

Title:  BNSF 6826 pauses outside the Speedway on its light engine run back north to Portage
Description:  Just brought a sand train to Madison for handoff to the WSOR, now the crew is running long hood forward north back to Portage. Just after crossing WIS-19 they brought the unit to a stop next to the Speedway convenience store. It is unusual to see six-axle widecab power this far south on this line, and foreign power even more so.
