KCS F3A 30
Title:  KCS F3A 30
Description:  KCS F3A 30 was 30 years old when it was photographed at Deramus Yard, but its career wasn't nearly over! It was a cab unit from one of two F3AB sets (30, 31) purchased for passenger service in November 1947, thus the two headlights and the water filler hatch under the first "S" in Kansas. Supplemented by two F7AB sets (32, 33) in 1949, all of these units lost their status as primary passenger power when E8A's 26-29 arrived 1952. The 30 was renumbered 4050 a few months after this photo and was later rebuilt into a slug with the same number. It was out of service on the KCS in June 1988, at the age of 41; but was sold to the Kiamichi Railroad where it was renumbered SL-2. After being retired by the KRR, it was scrapped.

KCS F7A 70
Title:  KCS F7A 70
Description:  This KCS identified this F7A as engine number 70 (in the number boards) and unit number 70A (in tiny numerals near the rear), and it was the lead unit on Shreveport-Hope train No. 24. It was renumbered 4055 in April 1978 and rebuilt into a slug with the same number in June 1983. The B-unit was the 76C, one of three F7B's built in February 1951 with steam generators. It was the last of the three in operation and was out of service by the end of 1978, although it wasn't retired until September 1985 and sold for scrap until April 1987. The train's third unit was a GP30. The photographer was offered a cab ride to Hope and back, but his professional obligations prevented him from taking advantage of that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

KCS No. 55
Title:  KCS No. 55
Description:  It's 8 A.M. on a beautiful December morning along the Southern Railway's BACK BELT at Metairie Road, and we are greeted by the rare and wonderful sight of two Kansas City Southern F-units approaching with an eastbound train. The 4051 is a 3-porthole F3 built in 1947 and the 4061 is a 1951 F7 rebuilt with F9 side panels in 1956. This is KCS No. 55 and it will terminate at the Southern's Oliver Yard, on the east side of New Orleans. The train usually passes here in the late afternoon or early evening, so it is running about 12-16 hours late.

In August 1982 the KCS began keeping a pair of F-units at New Orleans for situations just like this. The normal procedure was for the power that arrived on a southbound train to go out on that train's northbound counterpart, so the locomotives that arrived on No. 55 in the afternoon -- usually three geeps or a geep/slug/geep set -- would return north on No. 56 early the next day. Yesterday, No. 55 was running very late; so during the night the two F-units took No. 56 north until they met No. 55 and swapped trains. We dont know where the exchange took place, but the cab units went at least as far as Baton Rouge.

Before the F-units arrived, the railroad would use a pair of locally-assigned SW1500s for this relief work; but this adversely affected the jobs that the switchers worked. Keeping a pair of elderly cab units here didn't tie up newer road power, and it allowed the switchers to handle their regular jobs without complications. The F-units were also used on heavy transfer runs. In March 1983 the schedule of one train -- No. 84 -- was changed so that there would always be a set of road power available in New Orleans, and the cab units were sent elsewhere.

KCS SD40-2 648
Title:  KCS SD40-2 648
Description:  Kansas City Southern SD40-2 648 was on a set of power parked on the New Orleans Public Belt near Carrollton Avenue. The locomotive was an early SD40-2 - having been built in November 1972 - and had been overhauled shortly after its fifteenth birthday. It received this white paint job – complete with larger easy-to-read cab numbers - on 20 October 1988, six months after the railroad had introduced its gray paint scheme. In fact, it was the second to last unit to receive the white scheme. SD40-2 643 had been repainted gray on 28 March 1991 and still wore its nose-mounted OSCITROL signal light as well as ditch lights..

KCS SD40-2 680
Title:  KCS SD40-2 680
Description:  Kansas City Southern SD40-2 680 and 683 were at WEST YARD, just west of New Orleans. These were two of 14 KCS long-nose "snoot" units (677-690) which were originally equipped for radio-control helper operation, and these were very unusual in New Orleans until radio-control helpers were replaced by manned helpers. Not all of the r/c units were snoots, but they could all be identified by their three Motorola antennas, instead if just one.

Title:  KCS 712 and 656
Description:  On Thursday morning 28 March 2002 Kansas City Southern northbound intermodal train No. 10 struck an 18-wheeler loaded with concrete piles at the Louisiana Concrete Products grade crossing in Baton Rouge. This photo was taken three days later, and shows the train’s first two engines parked on the BATON ROUGE MORNING ADVOCATE newspaper plant siding. The damage to the train’s lead unit, SD50 712, is obvious; while the second unit, SD40-2 656, had a gash on the engineer’s side of its fuel tank. The train’s third unit, SD40M-2 626, was unharmed, as was the crew.
