Far from the ex-C&NW |
Description: |
These UP units are in Minnesota but are far from the ex-C&NW rails they normally traverse. Today they are the motive power for a short BNSF train consisting of empty ex-BN and AT&SF ballast hoppers. The crew got stopped by red signals in Long Lake for about thirty minutes or so until they finally got cleared on through. |

Proceed with caution? |
Description: |
BNSF dispatch halted this eastbound mixed manifest in Long Lake for a short while; then the crew was cleared to proceed. It looks like the crew had a pair of Dash-nines for power, but the lead unit could have been newer; I did not get the number. The signal sure showed up good in this zoom shot. I take it the yellow over red signal informs the engineer to proceed with caution? |

We are further up the TC&W here. Lake Street is visible in the distance. At right we find a townhome development that was built on former rail yard property. We are now looking north along the contested corridor from by the town homes. The line crosses Cedar Lake Parkway after rounding the curve. The rail line of contention--View three |
Description: |
Now we are looking towards Lake St. along the old Tootin' Louie main line. These rails had lain dormant from 1994 to 1998, when the Twin Cities & Western was re-routed onto them when the 29th Street corridor was severed by the Hiawatha Avenue/Hwy. 55 rebuild. Today it is at the center of a dispute between Minneapolis and St. Louis Park thanks to the latter city's request for the TC&W to remain here when the Southwest LRT line is built. |

We are standing on the former Minneapolis & St. Louis main line a block or two south of Lake Street. We are looking southwest towards where the line starts to curve as it heads for where it is spliced into the former Milwaukee Road in the vicinity of Bass Lake and Elevator yards in St. Louis Park. Whether or not freight trains will still roll here has become a bone of contention between the Water City and The Park thanks to the Southwest LRT line being slated to come through here. |

The rail line of contention--View four |
Description: |
We are up at Lake Street now, and still looking northeast. Note how there is room for at least two other tracks beneath the bridge at left. This is a holdover from when yard trackage along the old Louie was thick as noodles in a soup. You could theoretically route the freight line through there without needing to rebuild the bridge and put the tow LRT tracks under the bridge deck in the center provided the overhead wire could be fitted into the bridge as it currently is. |

Close to vanished home rails |
Description: |
This ex-C&NW ribside hopper was one of at least two I saw in a "blocked" cut of cars along the TC&W in SLP on this unusually cool evening on the last day of July, 2013. The fact it is sitting directly across form the former M&St.L/C&NW line to Hopkins and points south is poigant; this car and its compatriot are close to now-vanished home rails. Note how the old C&NW number has been retained. |

An eastbound unit coal train emerges from beneath the Hopkins Crossroad bridge as the crew rolls it towards Minneapolis along the Wayzata Sub. Note the ex-BN SD70MAC. |

Eastbound coal at Minnehaha Creek |
Description: |
An eastbound unit coal train has just crossed Minnehaha Creek for the second time on its journey east along the Wayzata Sub. It now is about to pass signal 191 as it approaches the Hopkins Crossroad underpass. |

Same group? |
Description: |
I found these two different signs touting no elimination of the Kenilworth Trail affixed to the power box on the north side of the Cedar Lake Parkway grade crossing. I can't tell if the same group or seperate groups with the same goal put them up. |

The "Friends" strike! |
Description: |
The ranks of the "Friends of the Kenilworth Trail" are manned with zealots willing to slap anti-co-location signs on just about anything they can along the contested corridor. These two (plus a torn one out of view beneath) were slapped onto the back of a "road closed" sign posted along the trail on the north side of the Cedar Lake Parkway crossing. |

Protest central |
Description: |
None of this propaganda was affixed to this signal box when I visited the Cedar Lake Parkway grade crossing two years ago. Now this signal box on the south side of the crossing is anti-LRT/co-location propaganda central thanks to looming decisions about the future of the Kenilworth Corridor. |

More power box decor |
Description: |
More "save the trail" leaflets were plastered on another side of the powerl box on the north side of the Cedar Lake Parkway grade crossing. This bunch is as serious as a torpedo attack about saving the Kenilworth Trail. |

"This Trail Hijacked By LRT" |
Description: |
"This trail Hijacked by LRT" this blue leaflet wails. It was affixed to trail-related infrastructure at the Cedar Lake Parkway crossing. I had to hold the upper left corner in place so I could capture this in the photo. Note the ex-M&St.L main line in the background. |
