An A-B Genesis Lashup
Title:  An A-B Genesis Lashup
Description:  Tucked in between the 261's canteen car and the passenger consist is this A-B set of Amtrak Genesis units. While everyone was gawking the 261, I made some time for them too. Incidentally enough, Amtrak units were once served at the roundhouse that used to stand here at Minneapolis Junction.

261 Close Up 2005 Fall Color Excursion
Title:  261 Close Up 2005 Fall Color Excursion
Description:  Here is a close up view of 261, her AMTRAK Genesis consort, and the rest of her train as they leave the CP/SOO behind and enter the BNSF at downtown St. Paul. Sorry that tree there blocks 261's pilot a bit. Was kind of shooting on adrenaline by this point in the day. It had been a long wait!

The 261 Returning Home From 2005 Fall Color Trip
Title:  The 261 Returning Home From 2005 Fall Color Trip
Description:  A scene which simply reeks of the romance of the steam passenger train! Milwaukee Road 261 is returning home as dusk falls from the first 2005 fall color trips to Winona and La Crescent, Minnesota. Beauty on the rails, thy name is "steam locomotive". I especially like how I got 261's headlight in this shot as she began to swing onto the downtown St. Paul wye just east of the Union Depot.

261 On The Old Milwaukee
Title:  261 On The Old Milwaukee
Description:  Moved away from the telegraph poles for this closer look. The trips were operated from the old Milwuakee Road Bass Lake yard in St. Louis Park, and 261 and her train now have only a few miles left to go until reaching Bass Lake after passing this point. The day was incredibly hot, and normally I would have been at the beach. But miss good ol 261, on the old Milwaukee no less? No way!

The 261 Passing The Former M&St.L/CNW Hopkins Depot
Title:  The 261 Passing The Former M&St.L/CNW Hopkins Depot
Description:  I was inspired by a photo of SP 4449 (which can be found on this site) at the Hopkins depot with the American Freedom train to try a similar shot with 261. Granted, the Milwaukee (now Twin Cities and Western) tracks are way over on the right, and the old Louie (now a Three Rivers Park trail. Let's have the rails and 4449 back instead!) and depot on the left, but the same principal still applies. Depot has been a coffehouse since 1998. Today 261 is returning in reverse from a trip to Colonge in honor of it's 100th anniversary. A further trip from there to Glencoe was also done this weekend.

MILW 261 Wesbound
Title:  MILW 261 Wesbound
Description:  We are now westbound for Wayzata. We are approaching the pedestrian overpass at Bryn Mawer park on the outskirts of downtown Minneapolis. Note the Kenwood water tower in the upper left corner and the unkempt grounds to the left. It is the northern border of the site of Great Northern's Lyndale yard. Rumor has it a GN engine is buried under the ground here. Perhaps 261 might have a GN friend one day?

Description:  A vestibule-eye view of 261 as she leads her train to Minneapolis on September 9th, 2006. We are in the suburb of Minnetonka, and 261 is on the bridge over Minnehaha Creek by Big Willow Park. Further east the old GN main loops across the creek again.

Title:  Arriving at Minneapolis Junction September 9th, 2006.

261 Pulling Out At Minneapolis Junction
Title:  261 Pulling Out At Minneapolis Junction
Description:  Having waited for a passing eastbound BNSF freight that had followed us from Wayzata, 261 swings out past the Harrison Street sign at Minneapolis Junction as we begin our return trip to Wayzata in another vestibule-eye view. Note the fans and riders in the "open coach" (a baggage car with the doors open and gates across the entrances) enjoying the show as we prepare to cross Harrison Street, and the contrast between the modern signals and a primo 1944 Alco 4-8-4!

The 261 In Minnetonka
Title:  The 261 In Minnetonka

MILW 261 In The Rain
Title:  MILW 261 In The Rain
Description:  Some trains steam in the rain, others get wet. Seriously, this day a storm tracked farther north than thought, dousing the Twin Cities in a cold drizzle. Here 261 is returning from her afternoon run to Howard Lake, MN. on the new BNSF alignment in Long Lake due to the Highway 12 reroute. She is in reverse, but isn't that smoke plume gloriously white? The entire consist, including the BNSF GP60 on the hind end, is visible in this shot. I had only seconds to get this shot before closing up the camera to prevent droplets getting on the lense whilst standing under the Brown Road overpass.

The 261 By Wayzata Bay
Title:  The 261 By Wayzata Bay
Description:  After running in reverse from Minneapolis Junction, 261 arrives. Soon to retrace her steps into Minneapolis on the point of the first trip of the day. Back to Minneapolis Junction and return. She was in town for the annual James J. Hill Days festival, which this year marked the 100th anniversary of the old Great Northern Wayzata depot (out of view to the left of this shot). The water in the foreground belongs to lovely Wayzata Bay of Lake Minnetonka.

Description:  Milwaukee Road Alco Class S3 4-8-4 261 rests inside the old diesel house at Minneapolis Junction that now is her home on September 30th, 2006. My own "motive power", my bike, wound up getting into the shot in the left hand corner. 261 sure looks good, even when sitting still.

Bandana Square's Steam Engine
Title:  Bandana Square's Steam Engine
Description:  Still on display at Bandana Square is Grand Trunk Western 0-8-0 8327. She used to have her tender lettered "Bandana Square", but a local group has restored her to her GTW appearance. A former GN/CNW baggage car was once coupled up behind her but it has been moved to the Gopher State Railway museum.

CP Motive Power Past And Present
Title:  CP Motive Power Past And Present
Description:  What a lovely Hudson "The Empress" is. Here she is charging past an eastbound freight that changed crews while in the hole at Loretto an hour before she arrived en route to Glenwood this day. Wonder if the crewman from the diesels watching her go by wanted to trade places with one of the guys in the cab!

Whistling Through Loretto
Title:  Whistling Through Loretto
Description:  Here comes Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 number 2816, "The Empress", with an excursion to Glenwood, MN, on the old Soo Line main. Here, with a CP GP tucked in behind her, she races through the small town of Loretto whistling and chugging up a storm. As she approached I sang the aloud praises for F. Nelson Blount, thanking him for saving her for his Steamtown collection, from which she returned to her old owner. By the way, would you belive 2816 once had smoke deflectors? Copy and paste this link: http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/steamtown/shs3g.htm and scroll down the page to find and black and white shot of her with them.

Chugging Over To The Old NP Main
Title:  Chugging Over To The Old NP Main
Description:  I began tailing the 2816 and 261 before the train was done passing under my first vantage point at the U of M Transitway bridge. I was on my bycicle, but since the engineers were easing them slowly along I was able to pass them and was approaching the grade crossing on Energy Park Drive where the "Union Cutoff" crosses...when the lights began to ring and the bells began to ding! Here they came, with the 2816 whistling up a storm! The train was switching from the old GN to the old NP due, apparently, to congestion on the old GN. I thought of the CP 4-6-2 2317, the Steamtown excursion locomotive, as I watched her repatriated Steamtown alumnus approach leading her larger American cohort. Bless you again, F. Nelson Blount, for saving the 2816, and thank you Milwuakee Road for your decision to save the 261!

That Isn't Diesel Exhaust
Title:  That Isn't Diesel Exhaust
Description:  Bringing up the hind end of the 2008 BNSF Employee Appreciation train is GE 515. The cloud of smoke did not come from her, of course. Incidentally, the radio handle for the train was not "MILW 261" but "BNSF 515." Presumably due to the push-pull nature of the trips from Minneapolis Junction to Delano and return. (My thanks to the commentator below for the correction.)

"Extra 3985"!
Title:  "Extra 3985"!
Description:  I always thought it was cool how UP and SP steamers had signs the train number could be displayed on. Thus the Union Pacific 3985 proudly proclaims this train as the "Extra 3985". Or to use the official name for this run, the "Twin Cities Limited". Charging north for St. Paul through Rosemount, MN watched by folks and fans on the east and west sides of the Spine Line (which the UP shares with the CP/PGR between Rosemount and Comus, MN). Incidentally, ever since the UP/CNW merger I was thirsting to see eithier the 844 or 3985 pay the Twin Cities a visit. A factor which lessened my sadness over the passing of the North Western. Finally, thirteen years later (and having missed the 3985 in 2002) I could finally write this in my railfan notes: "Yippie! At last I have seen UP steam ..." And what a steamer is the 3985! I especially loved her deep, melodious whistle.

Where Politicians And Actors Have Been
Title:  Where Politicians And Actors Have Been
Description:  When the Freedom Train arrived at Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis in 1975, Hubert H. Humphrey and his grandson rode in the cab. In 1986, moviegoers saw Burt Lancaster get the drop on Doyle McCormack while Kirk Douglas looked on from track level and later saw Dana Carvey climb that ladder into her cab in the movie "Tough Guys." Instead Of A Chorus Line, A Photo Line
Title:  Instead Of A Chorus Line, A Photo Line
Description:  Yah-tah-tah, yah-tah-tah. Puttin' on the train crazy Ritz. As usual, fans and daisy pickers alike flock to see the sight. One deplorable scene happened a few minutes before I took this shot: One of the photographers in the line to the right of the photo kept shooing away via whistles and shouts people trying to get closer photos of the engine from the side. Rude. Some foamers are going to ruin it for everybody one day. Play nice, boys and girls. We all want to see the train. Let's show some common courtesey.
