Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2023, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, MILW, and SOO rails, as well as FV&LS operating on former SOO, MILW, C&NW, and GB&W rails. Once in a while I hope to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 9626 and IC 3101
Title:  CN 9626 and IC 3101
Description:  A CN local crosses Mud Creek via the former C&NW bridge as it heads northeast at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 12 Feb. '23. A pier for the former SOO timber trestle bridge can be seen beyond this bridge.

IC 3101
Title:  IC 3101
Description:  A CN train crosses Clayton Ave. (and crosses the border from Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, to the Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI) as it heads west along former SOO rails at Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI, on 26 Feb. '23. Fox Crossing, WI, was formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016. I was thrilled to see a caboose in the consist. Sorry, but I will not willingly utter the phrase "shoving platform" to describe a piece of rolling stock which is obviously a caboose. WC 15 is the former AC 9602, although one reference claims it was AC 9606.

GTW 5847 and IC 9622
Title:  GTW 5847 and IC 9622
Description:  A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI, on 3 Mar. '23. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). This line was laid by the C&NW in 1861. The former SOO rails run parallel beyond the train; they were laid by the W&N in 1920.

EJE 703 and GTW 5847
Title:  EJE 703 and GTW 5847
Description:  A CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 11 Mar. '23. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The facility visible in the background is Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI). This facility has not received rail service for quite a while, but could be served via former SOO rails. The C&NW rails were laid in 1861. The SOO rails were originally laid by the W&N in 1920.

CN 3172 and CN 8101
Title:  CN 3172 and CN 8101
Description:  A CN train passes the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Mar. '23. The train was preparing to set out and pick up cars at the yard. The overpass was erected ca. 1988 in order to eliminate the busiest grade crossing in the area. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

CN 3172 and CN 8101
Title:  CN 3172 and CN 8101
Description:  A CN train parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Mar. ‘23. The train was preparing to set out and pick up cars at the yard. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

BLE 866
Title:  BLE 866
Description:  An interesting visitor from out-of-town, BLE 866, works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Mar. '23. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. This line was laid by the WC in 1882.

GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Title:  GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Description:  Appleton, WI A CN train crosses W. 2nd St. as it sets out cars at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 18 Mar. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The FV&LS depot is partially visible to the left. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Title:  GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it sets out cars at Appleton Junction, WI, on 18 Mar. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the second locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible to the left is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.
