UP 5716 @ Rock Island Arsenal

UP 3985 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  UP 3985 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  UP's big beast of the 90s, this unit has sat for around a decade prior to being moved from Cheyenne to Silvis. This is the first time I've seen any moving steam beyond IAIS's 6988, and seeing such a large locomotive this close was something that had me in awe.

UP3985's driver @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  UP3985's driver @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  69 inches of driving wheel is nothing to scoff at on a locomotive. Everything on this locomotive seemed massive, drivers included, even placed next to me, and I'm 6'1! Regardless, seeing all of the small details on this unit was pretty awesome, and I was glad to get this beast.

UP flatcar and 5511 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  UP flatcar and 5511 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  Spotlights and generators take up the deck of the flatcar closest to me, followed by the other steam locomotive on the move, UP 5511. This unit, until recently, has been pretty obscure and known by very few in the community.

UP 5511 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  UP 5511 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  The other steam locomotive being moved by Union Pacific, 5511, is a 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type locomotive, UP class TTT-6, being carried to Silvis, where it will meet its siblings and eventually a couple fellow 2-10-2s.

UP 5511's drivers
Title:  UP 5511's drivers
Description:  63" of wheel allowed this locomotive to roll, along with all of its valve gear. The oscillating movement of the gear was fascinating to me, someone who has only seen one steam locomotive moving prior to this event. Along the top of the photo is the air line running through the locomotive.

UP 6936 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  UP 6936 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  A bit more of a contemporary beast, but one of my personal favorites, UP 6936 divides the final passenger cars and E9B/steam generator from the rest of the train. For those not in the know, this locomotive was built in an order of a little under 50 locomotives to celebrate the Union Pacific's 100th anniversary, hence the locomotive class' nickname as the "Centennials."

UP 6936 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  UP 6936 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  A front view of the "Centennial," one may notice that the cab/nose design is awful familiar to the cab/nose used on the much more modern SD60Ms, SD70Ms, and SD70MACs, along with a couple other locomotives.

UP caboose
Title:  UP caboose
Description:  A caboose of a distinct but fascinating design, UP 309011 was pressed into MOW service in 1993 after having been built as UP 25740, a class CA-10 caboose, in 1975 and used in revenue service until the out-phasing of cabeese in the 1980s.

AMTK 670 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  AMTK 670 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  This isn't the first time an E8B has traveled on this stretch of track, and it hopefully won't be the last. After having served Union Pacific and Amtrak, this unit will hopefully look much better in the future than it does right now.

AMTK 670 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Title:  AMTK 670 @ Rock Island Arsenal
Description:  Although this unit has seen better and much more glorious days when it worked for UP and then Amtrak, it still manages to have some fascinating charm to it, even in the modern era when it looks battered and bruised.
