Album Info:BNSF's Scenic Subdivision is arguably one of the most famed rail lines in the US. Built in the late 1800s by the Great Northern Railway, the route runs from Seattle to Wenatchee, crossing the famed Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains, and paralleling the shores of Puget Sound from Everett to Seattle. The route sees around 20-30 trains per day, including eastbound and westbound sections of the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago, and Sounder commuter trains between Seattle and Everett. Images in this album include photos taken along the Stevens Pass climb from Everett to Wenatchee, and the run along the shore between Everett and the Salmon Bay Bridge in Ballard.

Title:  GN 599
Description:  GN 599, still in BN paint, is on a side track in BNSFs small yard in Skykomish. The tracks in the foreground are 1/8 scale tracks owned by the Great Northern & Cascade Railway, a tourist attraction operating out of the Skykomish depot. The 599 has since been repainted into GNs Empire Builder scheme by volunteers at the GN&C and the depot.

Title:  BNSF 6013
Description:  BNSF 6013 rolls through Skykomish on the tail end of an empty coal train bound for points east. 6013 is 10 years old at the time of this image. Skykomish was once a major terminal for Great Northern's electric locomotive fleet, but with the dieselization of the Cascade Tunnel, became a much less-used station, with most of the yard now removed. Skykomish was Station No. 02116 on the BN Pacific Division. Description:  NS 4067 is the second unit on Z-PTLCHC as it departs Wenatchee. In three days, 4067 will be in Chicago. 4067 was originally a GE C40-9, built in early 1995. In mid 2017, the unit was rebuilt into its current form as an AC44C6M, complete with a new number and safety cab. EDIT: On December 20, 2022, 4067 was the lead unit on a Norfolk Southern train that struck a truck in Collegedale, TN. Both crew members were hospitalized and later released in short order.

Old Cascade Tunnel
Title:  Old Cascade Tunnel
Description:  The west portal of the original Cascade tunnel sits forlorn and abandoned. The Iron Goat Trail runs from the tunnel portal along the original right of way of the Great Northern route. This area is very close to the site of Wellington, a railroad town where two trains were swept off the mountain in an avalanche. The route was bypassed in 1929 when the current Cascade Tunnel opened for service. Today, a small creek runs through the old tunnel, which has been blocked for hikers.

Description:  A small creek runs through the original Cascade Tunnel. In late 2007, part of the tunnel roof collapsed, blocking the tunnel to hikers. The Iron Goat Trail runs from here several miles along the old roadbed to where the old route meets the current at Scenic.

Description:  This overgrown concrete foundation was once the site of the water tower in Wellington, on the original alignment of the Great Northern Steven Pass route. When the Great Northern mainline was rerouted through the Cascade Tunnel, this water tower, along with the rest of Wellington, was abandoned.

Description:  GP38-2 2076 leads sister unit 2080 with a train of tank cars. The units were built in 1970, and were some of the first units to arrive new for BN. The unusual cars behind the engines are used for hauling large sub-assemblies of airplanes for Boeing. Today, they are being used as buffer cars. The second car, TBCX 777015, is one of 20 cars in the 777000 series. These cars were built to haul sub-assemblies for Boeing 777s from Wichita to Everett. Still frame from original video.

Description:  BNSF 800516 is an aircraft parts car. Its the same basic idea as an Auto parts boxcar, but carrying large plane sub-assemblies required some reworking of the standard boxcar. The large covers (labeled on first and off first) are designed to be lifted off by a crane. Its a similar idea to a steel coil car. Today, its serving as a buffer car. These units will replace the General Electric units currently in use on the rest of the Amtrak system. 300 was completed in April of 2021 and was delivered to Amtrak in June of that year.

Looking West at Sky
Title:  Looking West at Sky
Description:  BNSFs ex-Great Northern Scenic Subdivision lies quiet on a mid-July afternoon at Skykomish. The center track is the Skykomish Siding, with the main off to the right. On the left are a handful of tracks leading the BNSFs maintenance yard in Sky. Skykomish was once an important division point on the railroad. In the GN days, Sky was the western end of Great Northern electric operations, and a large yard for servicing both steam and electric power existed on the south end of town. After GN pulled the plug on electric operations in 1956, Skykomish remained an important helper station for GN and later Burlington Northern. Helpers were often addd or cut off from ascending or descending trains here. The end of manned helper operations with the introduction of DPUs led to furthern cutbacks at Sky, and today only a fraction of the former rail infrastructure remains.

Description:  Norfolk Southern 9681 is the second unit on an eastbound Z-train descending the grade at Leavenworth. 9681 is a C44-9W. This unit and other units of Norfolk Southerns Dash-9 fleet were originally built with a horsepower rating of 4000 horsepower. The 4000 HP Dash-9s were exclusive to Norfolk Southern, and were built in the mid/late 1990s. In the early 2010s, NS began upgrading these units to 4400 horsepower, and this unit recieved said upgrade in 2013.

Z-Train Climbing The Hill
Title:  Z-Train Climbing The Hill
Description:  The engineer of BNSF 6667 gives us a wave as his Z-train rumbles through Leavenworth. Located at 1,171 feet above sea-level, Leavenworth is one of the few flat spots on the Stevens Pass Route. This train has already climbed nearly 400 feet from the division point at Wenatchee, but will still have to climb another 1700 feet to the summit. The engineer keeps his 4 engines pulling as the rear of his train comes off the 1.6% grade from Wenatchee, and the front begins the long 1.4% climb to the Cascade Tunnel. The second engine is a Canadian Pacific AC44CW.

Description:  The crew of the eastbound Empire Builder waves as their train enters Leavenworth. Amtrak 82 leads #8 today, and will connect with the Portland Section of the train (#28 Eastbound), and run as one combined train the rest of the way to Chicago as train #8. AMTK 82 is a P42DC, built in 1997 by General Electric. These units are being actively phased out of service on the Empire Builder by new Siemens ALC-42s.
