Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:
A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Jun. '20. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot lie to the right of the lead locomotive. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Part of that facility is used as a warehouse by somebody, the office/retail building is currently home to the Valley Academy for the Arts, 139 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is partially visible beyond that.

Description:
A CN local traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Jun. '20. The local was trying to sneak off to Menasha while I was preoccupied with the through freight traversing the west leg of the wye on the right. The local is passing Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, lies in the foreground. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which is hidden by vegetation. The Main St. overpass can be seen to the right.

GTW 4912
Description:
A CN local crosses Washington St. as it prepares to service Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 24 Jun. '20. The awesome, old building partially visible to the left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style) were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. Wayne's Towing and Service occupied this building for quite a while between the original and current occupants. Glass Nickel Pizza, 217 Washington St., purveyors of some mighty tasty pizza, can be seen to the right. I'm not sure of the previous occupants of the building. There used to be a Clark station at that address. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was once also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s.

It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The north leg of the wye runs out-of-frame to the right. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, is partially visible beyond that. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, dominates the horizon. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18.

Morrison St., 767-779 Morrison St. in original street numbering system. The facility is currently occupied by the Appleton Area School District and Aramark Food Service. Previous occupants include General Cheese Co., Inc., ca. '58. The facility used to receive rail service, but not for a long time. Local was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. as it heads northeast at the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Jul. '20. Train was preparing to set out a string of cars and had three locomotives, CN 2991, CN 2928, BLE 909. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel to the left. If only the sun could have been more cooperative.

Train was preparing to set out a string of cars and had three locomotives, CN 2991, CN 2928, BLE 909. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel on the other side of the train. The overpass, erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07. A pair of railfans can be seen atop the overpass.

A CN local crosses Millview Dr. as it prepares to vacate the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen along Millview Dr. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood just out-of-frame to the right, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. I was standing where the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill had stood for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. Arrowhead Park lies beyond the fence to the right. In the background, a CN through freight rests on the west leg of the wye.

A CN local momentarily fouls Millview Dr. so it can clear the turnout to transition from the north leg to the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen along Millview Dr. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood just out-of-frame to the right, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. I was standing where the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill had stood for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. A pair of unimaginative modern buildings, feebly posing as architecture, currently occupy the site of the old paper mill. Arrowhead Park lies beyond the fence to the right. In the background, a CN through freight rests on the west leg of the wye.

A CN local pauses on the former C&NW siding at Stroebe, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. Local was waiting for a northbound local. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on rrpicturearchives.net)). The train is resting under the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. Seeing as it was, in some regards, a bridge to nowhere and many citizens of Menasha have Polish ancestry, it was jokingly referred to as the Polish Connection. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. On 1 May '19, the interchange was named in honor of a local politician. I vehemently disagree with the choice made by the powers-that-be. I steadfastly believe that First Sergeant Elmer J. Burr would be a much more worthy namesake for this prominent location. First Sgt. Burr was a Wisconsin National Guard Soldier from Menasha, WI, who earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously, for his heroism and self-sacrifice on Christmas Eve of 1942 at Buna, New Guinea. The former SOO rails run parallel just out-of-frame to the left.

A CN local, with at least 41 cars, parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) at 1506 hours on 3 Jul. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3110 and IC 9568. The local is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. The Jacobsen Rd. overpass can be seen in the background. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The telephone pole to the left stands along an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. To the right you can see some brand new signals waiting to take over for the old signals to the left. Also to the right, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case waits to take over for an awesome, old signal relay case.

A CN local passes the Winneconne Ave. overpass as it returns to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Jul. '20. I was standing in the middle of what was once the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The iconic crossing tower which, until 1991, would have been visible to the right of the locomotive now resides at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum.

A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 11 Jun. '20. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the locomotive. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to portions of the park, in preparation of future improvements. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N.
