Album Info:Victor is the home of former NYC (Auburn Road) and LV (main line to Buffalo) trackage and the roadbed of the Rochester & Eastern (R&E). Victor Hiking Trails Inc. (VHT) manages the majority of the abandoned portions. The former LV is operated at present by the FGLK. The Ontario Central (ONCT) was the long-time operator between the LV and FGLK eras. Operation over the NYC Auburn Road east to Canandaigua has been gone for close to 40 years now and the other end west to Pittsford (and thence to Rochester) close to 60 years. This Ontario County construction project entails installing (burying) a new sewer line along the Auburn Road. In most cases, it involves digging up (or close to) the trail, laying the pipe, and finally, restoration. Along the few hundred feet of still active former NYC rail however, things are a little different.

Former NYC Auburn Road
Title:  Former NYC Auburn Road
Description:  This is the former NYC Auburn Road, looking to the east from the School St. crossing. The housing development on the right is relatively new. Just woods in the NYC era.

Former NYC Auburn Road
Title:  Former NYC Auburn Road
Description:  This is the former NYC Auburn Road, looking to the east, just above the curve of the connector that heads into the village to the former LV. The change in elevation is quite apparent - the old roadbed had to be shaved down quite a bit to install the connector.

Tucked away at VI
Title:  Tucked away at VI
Description:  The former ONCT plow and some privately owned cars are tucked away on the lower lead at Victor Insulators. In the ONCT days, one or two locomotives were based in Victor and housed inside the Victor Insulators facility, so the lower lead had to be kept clear. Today, FGLK operates the trackage, the locomotives are gone, and the lower lead is used only for car storage.

Former NYC Auburn Road (almost)
Title:  Former NYC Auburn Road (almost)
Description:  Still looking to the east, this is a shot of the connector as it rises to meet the remnants of the Auburn Road. The fence on the left is relatively new (everything is relative...). It did not exist during the ONCT era. The VHT trail heads off to the right, away from the tracks. The new sewer (or is it water?) line will skirt around the track on the side opposite the fence.

Former NYC Auburn Road at the top of the hill
Title:  Former NYC Auburn Road at the top of the hill
Description:  This is the former NYC Auburn Road, still looking to the east. Maple Ave. is in the distance (just beyond the yellow CAT). Behind me is the connector. This is the present unloading area for covered hoppers delivered to Victor Insulator. The yellow hose on the left (through the fence) and a few others (out of sight to the left) connect to the troughs under the hoppers. The spur heading off to the left leads to a side access dock, used to unload the occasional boxcar. As evidenced by the ties tucked into the former main, this is now the end of track. Almost everything in this view is original NYC, including the raggedy old (but still working) switch stand. That's not old trolley wire above - it's a safety wire for worker bees to attach to while tending to the covered hopper roof hatches. Beyond Maple Ave. (out of sight), the VHT maintained trail picks back up on the former NYC roadbed.

Former NYC Auburn Road at the top of the hill
Title:  Former NYC Auburn Road at the top of the hill
Description:  This is the (almost) former NYC Auburn Road, now looking back to the west from the VI unloading area. The original NYC trackage is behind me. The track in the foreground is the connector as it starts its descent down to the former LV in the village. The derail protects cars from getting away and rolling down the hill.

From the former NYC Auburn Road at VI (turned to the left, looking to the north [roughly])
Title:  From the former NYC Auburn Road at VI (turned to the left, looking to the north [roughly])
Description:  Another view of the connector as it heads into the village and the LV. Since it didn't exist in the LV era, there wasn't an LV name for this spur. In the ONCT era, we referred to the lower lead as the engine house lead and the top of the hill as, well, the top of the hill.

Title:  From the former NYC Auburn Road at VI (turned to the right, looking to the north [roughly])
Description:  This is from the top of the former NYC Auburn Road, looking down at the connector (foreground) and the lower lead into VI. Note the fence and gate. Prior to its installation, this was a popular spot for the local deer herd.

Former NYC Auburn Road
Title:  Former NYC Auburn Road
Description:  Not sure if it's a new water line or a new sewer line. I thought water, but the latest VHT newsletter said sewer. In any event, the stake in the photo means something to somebody, I'm sure.

Take your pick at Rt. 251
Title:  Take your pick at Rt. 251
Description:  This is the VHT trailhead parking area on Rt. 251, temporarily used as a staging area for equipment and materials. The view is looking to the west about a 100 ft. in from 251. For those of you keeping score, the NYC is off to the left out of sight, the LV is off to the right out of sight, and the R&E is on the left inside of the NYC. Walking the trail directly ahead of this view will take you to the R&E roadbed as it bends to the right and then up and over the LV. The bridge abutments are still there.

Title:  11/9/2020 update - 1 of 7
Description:  This is the view from Maple Ave., looking to the west. The new chain link fence is in place, separating the track from the trail extension. Note the pile of old rail still remaining from the previous work done in 2019.

Title:  11/9/2020 update - 2 of 7
Description:  Taking a step or two to the left from the previous shot, this is (again) the view from Maple Ave., looking to the west. Nice job on the trail and both fences.

11/9/2020 update - 5 of 7
Title:  11/9/2020 update - 5 of 7
Description:  The old NYC switch, elderly switch stand and rotting switch timbers have all been pulled. The existing siding is now straight-railed with the connector. The switch parts (points, frog, etc.) are not in the pile at Maple Ave., so I presume they all found new homes.

Title:  11/9/2020 update - 6 of 7
Description:  The derail stand and the old pink derail are gone as well, although the ties remain. In its place is a yellow flop-over derail. Not shown is a second yellow flop-over derail down below on the old engine house lead.
