Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the fall of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

IC 9605 and CN 4705
Title:  IC 9605 and CN 4705
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of N. Appleton St. and W. Packard St./W. North St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 23 Sep. '19. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be at least five tracks crossing N. Appleton St., only the main line remains. The C&NW freight house stood just out-of-frame to the right, a team track remained for quite a while after the building was removed. The C&NW's downtown passenger depot, one of three in Appleton, would be visible to the left of the lead locomotive if it still stood.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local prepares to service the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Oct. '19. The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The former C&NW bridge spans the Fox River in the foreground, it was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. The mill's Rail King can be seen near the center of the photograph. Looking northeast from what was, until recently, Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the left).

IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  A CN local parallels the Fox River and approaches the S. Memorial Dr. bridge as it descends the grade from the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, down into 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 6 Nov. '19. A fresh, early season snowfall blankets the scene. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks with about 12 cars. Some of the neat, old houses on W. Front St. can be seen atop the bluff in the background. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

GTW 5812
Title:  GTW 5812
Description:  A CN local rests along Union St. at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Nov. '19. Local was preparing to head for Waupaca, WI. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

The former MILW bridge, now sans rails, runs parallel a few feet to the left of the C&NW bridge. The MILW abandoned this stretch of track in 1981, portions of it were sold to the C&NW. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. Some of the homes along W. Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River via the former C&NW bridge, parallels W. Edison Ave. (originally Mill St.), and passes beneath the Oneida Skyline Bridge as it heads northeast through 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '19. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks and had one locomotive, GTW 6226. The Atlas Paper Co. mill, 425 W. Water St., stands on the far side of the river at left. Completed in 1878 and expanded over the years, it eventually became part of the Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C). The mill ceased operation ca. 1999, the year K-C donated it to the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame. After some of the additions were razed, the Hall of Fame opened its new home and its interactive museum, the Paper Discovery Center, on 26 Feb. ’05. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Description:  A CN local parallels Garner's Creek and crosses State St. as it approaches the remnants of the former C&NW yard at Combined Locks, WI on 9 Nov. '19. Local was preparing to extract some cars from the Midwest Paper Group mill, 540 Prospect St., looming in the background. Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Ten members of the mill’s management purchased the facility from France-based Sequana SA on 19 Dec. ’14. Forced into receivership, it was purchased by scrap dealers, Industrial Assets Corp. and Maynards Industries USA, in Oct. ’17. They bought it to shut it down and gut it. By some miracle, they changed their minds and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland.

Description:  A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and passes the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. On 1 May '19, the interchange was named in honor of a local politician. I vehemently disagree with the choice made by the powers-that-be. I steadfastly believe that First Sergeant Elmer J. Burr would be a much more worthy namesake for this prominent location. First Sgt. Burr was a Wisconsin National Guard Soldier from Menasha, WI, who earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously, for his heroism and self-sacrifice on Christmas Eve of 1942 at Buna, New Guinea. The former SOO rails run parallel to the right. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Train had two locomotives, CN 3806 and CN 3116.

CN 9515, et al.
Title:  CN 9515, et al.
Description:  A CN local passes behind the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but this isn't the first time I've watched them do it this way. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 9515 and GTW 5812. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:  A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose.

Train had four locomotives, CN 2265 and CN 2321 pulling as well as CN 2583 and CN 8883 pushing. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at left. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Title:  GTW 5812
Description:  A CN local clears Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 Dec. '19. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. The small white building partially visible at left, at 403 Racine St., was the home of Dave's Burger Shanty for many years (from at least the ‘60s thru the ‘80s).
