Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin (and a handful in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) in the fall of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  BNSF 7550 and BNSF 3878
Description:  A CN through freight crosses the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 Oct. '18. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

GTW 5836
Title:  GTW 5836
Description:  A CN local parallels E. Eagle Flats Pkwy. (originally Railroad Ave.) as it pulls 4 boxcars westward through 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 20 Oct. '18. Train was heading back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The locomotive is passing what once was the east end of the C&NW yard in 'The Flats.' The last remnant of the yard, a passing siding, was pulled up in 2014. The MILW had a small yard just out of frame to the right. Railroad Ave. was renamed E. Eagle Flats Pkwy. ca. 2012, when bland apartment buildings, Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, were erected on the site of the historic Riverside Paper mill (out-of-frame to the right). Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Train was heading back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The local is passing what once was the C&NW yard in 'The Flats.' The last remnant of the yard, a passing siding, was pulled up in 2014. The long ties at left mark the spot of the west turnout. The MILW had a small yard, and depot, just out of frame to the right. Railroad Ave. was renamed E. Eagle Flats Pkwy. ca. 2012, when bland apartment buildings, Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, were erected on the site of the historic Riverside Paper mill (out-of-frame to the right). JWM Coenen Mechanical (current occupant of the old Allis-Chalmers, originally Valley Iron Works, facility), 401 E. South Island St., dominates the scene. The outline of the letters that once spelled Allis-Chalmers can still be seen at the upper left of this (west) facade. The nearest, and probably oldest, portion of the facility spanned the South Channel of the Fox River when it was built at some point between 1911 and 1955. South Island St. (just out-of-frame to the left) used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel (behind me to the left) was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was gradually filled in the following years. The only remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River at the east end of this substantial facility. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which he speculated would be built soon after. He was right. For much of its history, this facility fabricated paper machines. The current occupant supports the paper industry, and other customers. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Woolen Mills Lofts, 218 E. South Island St., can be seen at left. The Appleton Woolen Factory commenced production of yarn at its new factory on Grand Chute Island along West’s Power Canal in Jan. 1862. It burned down in Jul. ‘63, production resumed in Apr. ‘64 after it was rebuilt. It was destroyed by fire again on 17 Jun. ‘81 and construction of a new, masonry structure (the heart of the current facility) commenced immediately. The company was reorganized as Appleton Woolen Mills during the reconstruction. They added mackinaws and flannels to their list of products in ‘88. In ‘03 production at this facility shifted solely to papermakers’ felt after production of their other woolen products was moved to a recently acquired mill at Reedsburg, WI. Numerous additions were constructed between ‘93 and 1962. The name was shortened to Appleton Mills in ‘61. They moved to a new facility at 2100 N. Ballard Rd. in ‘69. Conversion of this factory to apartments commenced ca. 2016 and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on 26 Apr. ‘18. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. Description:  One CN local waits behind the depot/yard office while another local passes in front of it at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 26 Oct. '18. The local at right is departing for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3129 and IC 3138. The local at left, powered by GTW 5856, was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. There used to be a diamond under IC 3129, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, that line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. That building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called the Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:  A CN local passes SOO 736 while traversing Telulah Park as it heads southwest with 14 cars via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 30 Oct. '18. The local was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. SOO 736 was donated to the City by John Mason Balliet. He also paid for construction of a temporary spur off the branch line to get the locomotive into the park, as well as a fence erected later to deter vandals. The locomotive arrived on 14 Nov. '59. When asked why he did it, he said, "so that children would know what [a steam engine] looked like." He owned an insurance agency, but railroads were a hobby. He served as a director for MP, MC, LE&E, and P&LE railroads.

Description:  A CN local pulls 14 cars across the Fox River via the former C&NW bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 30 Oct. '18. From this angle it looks like a solitary railroad bridge, but there are actually two bridges a few feet apart. The second, nearer, one is the former MILW bridge, now sans rails. The Oneida Skyline Bridge spans the scene. The local was headed back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after working eastern Appleton, Kimberly and Combined Locks. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. CN 2120
Title:  CN 2120
Description:  CN 2120, a former C&NW unit, and its train rest on the east leg of the wye at the former C&NW yard at Powers, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The CN logo is partially visible on the gray building to the left of the locomotive. About 9 hours later, we watched CN 2120 pull 20 cars (but not this centerbeam flatcar) southbound through Marinette, WI. Zooming in on Google Street View reveals that this view would have been obscured by the feed mill that stood here not too long ago.

C&NW Powers, MI Depot/Yard Office
Title:  C&NW Powers, MI Depot/Yard Office
Description:  The southwest and southeast walls of the CN, former C&NW, depot/yard office at the intersection of 2nd St. and Front St., Powers, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The original depot stood until at least 1969. I think it stood a few hundred feet to the southwest, within the convergence of the north and east legs of the wye (but I'm not positive).

CN 2718 and CN 5335
Title:  CN 2718 and CN 5335
Description:  A CN local approaches Main St. as it pulls 20 cars northwest via former C&NW rails at Hermansville, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The lead locomotive is passing the approximate location of the former junction with the SOO. The former SOO right-of-way running northeast from here is now a recreational trail, but the rails running southwest are still in use by the CN toward Pembine, WI.

CN 2718, et al.
Title:  CN 2718, et al.
Description:  A CN local crosses Main St. as it pulls 20 cars northwest via former C&NW rails at Hermansville, MI on 3 Nov. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2718 and CN 5335. The interesting, old, brick building at left was the Hiawatha Fur Farm's (Hiawatha Silver Fox Farm's) pelting station or fur house. It was likely built in 1931, because the company's earlier facility was destroyed by fire in Feb. of that year. The facility pelted furs for at least seven farms owned by or associated with the Nieman family in Wis. and Upper Mich. (in the 1940s at least). The pelts were shipped by rail to fur auctions in New York.

Description:  VRSX 538 pulpwood car was part of the consist of a CN local crossing Main St. while headed northwest via former C&NW rails at Hermansville, MI on 3 Nov. '18. When VRSX caught my eye as I watched the train roll by, I thought it might be a reporting mark for Verso Paper (this train was destined for their facility at Quinnesec), but I haven't found anything to indicate that that was ever the case.

CN 2718
Title:  CN 2718
Description:  A CN local disappears from public view as it pulls 20 cars into the vast rail network within the immense, collocated Verso Paper and Specialty Minerals complex at Quinnesec, MI on 3 Nov. '18. Champion International Corp. commenced construction of a pulp mill here in 1981. Pulp production began 1985, paper production followed in 1990. The facility is served via former C&NW rails. It was purchased by International Paper ca. 2000. They sold their coated paper mills to Apollo Global Management, LLC, in 2006, naming the new entity Verso Corp., Verso Paper, or Verso Paper Corp. (depending on which reference you choose to believe). It is difficult to see, due to the less-than-desirable location of the sun, but the locomotives can be seen beyond the tree line as they head south into the sizeable yard on the property.

Former Junction of MILW and W&M at Iron Mountain, MI
Title:  Former Junction of MILW and W&M at Iron Mountain, MI
Description:  Looking south along the E&LS, former MILW, rails from E. H St. at Iron Mountain, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The remnants of the MILW yard can be seen to the right. The tracks curving off to the left are a rare remnant of the former W&M. This remnant is about 6,000 ft. long. A short section of track bridges the gap between the spot where the W&M rails were truncated long ago, and the western end of the truncated former C&NW, now CN, line from Powers, MI. I didn't realize the significance of the rails at left, if I had, I would have included that turnout in this photograph. ELS 3037 hides in the shadows next to the string of covered hoppers.
