Album Info:Here are the front cover and an 11-page cover article by Mr. Frederick Westing entitled "The Locomotive That Made Penn Station Possible." They were published originally in the October 1956 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 28-38. "Smile not at the DD-1's flapping siderods. She conquered a river for a railroad. Besides, Pennsy had its reasons when it borrowed a steam-engine wheel arrangement, rods and all, to build a juice jack." (Page 29)

Supposedly, there is a two-unit DD-1 numbered "3977" on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #3976 and #3977; their original two-digit number is "22." Both are DD-1's (2-B+B-2) built in Juniata during July of 1910 and rated at 3,160 horsepower. #3976 was transferred to the Long Island Rail Road in April of 1928 and renumbered "350-B," but #3977 was retired in January of 1949.

Shown here is PRR engine #3930, an L-5 (1-B-B-1) electric built in Juniata during January of 1924, rated at 3,300 horsepower, and retired in May of 1944.

It was published originally in the October 1956 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 32. Painting Caption: "The common meeting ground of K-4 Pacifics and DD-1 electrics was Manhattan Transfer, an engine-change point just east of Newark whose high-level platforms could be reached only by rail. Trains commissioned Artist George Gloff to re-create that era." Depicted here are PRR engines #5426 and #24. #5426 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in August of 1956. #24 actually consists of #3980 and #3981. Both are DD-1's (2-B+B-2) built in Juniata during July of 1910 and rated at 3,160 horsepower; both were later transferred to the Long Island Rail Road and renumbered: #3980 became "360-A" and #3981 became "356-B."

Description:  Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City, New York, in July of 1967. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3937 and #3936. Both are DD-1 (2-B+B-2) electrics built in Juniata during May of 1911, rated at 4,000 horsepower total, and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. In this context, they're utilized only for maintenance in the East and Hudson River Tunnels.
