Album Info:As part of Conrail-contracted commuter operations for NJDOT, former PC E-8's joined the NJDOT-stenciled GG1’s to serve the NY&LB at South Amboy in July, 1978. The few remaining PC E-7’s operating in March, 1978 appeared ready for retirement.

NJDOT GG1 4876
Title:  NJDOT GG1 4876
Description:  CR-operated NJDOT GG-1 4876 rests with both pans up between sister units at the South Amboy engine terminal. After retirement from NJDOT in 1983, the GG-1 was donated to NRHS Washington, DC chapter. This GG-1 was famously known to have piloted No. 173, the "Federal Express," from Boston to Washington, DC on January 14, 1953. While approaching Union Station, brake loss of 13 of it's 16 cars made the train a runaway, causing 4876 to smash through the track bumper, the iron track gate, demolish the stationmaster's office, run out onto the concouse floor, and fall through the concrete floor to the basement below, along with two of it's steel passenger cars. After shipping to Altoona, 4876 was placed back in service just 10 months after the accident. A tribute to the amazing skill and determination of the Altoona shop crews. CR retired their freight fleet of GG-1's in 1979, but the NJDOT-contracted GG-1's 4872-4884 saw their operating days extended to the fall of 1983.

Description:  Conrail still operated NJ commuter lines under contract from NJDOT in 1978. Not until January 1, 1983 did NJ Transit assume Conrail passenger operations. With former PC providing GG-1s, E-8As, and a few E-7As, great passenger consists like this scene were available in NJ for many years. Here at South Amboy station on a hot and bright July day in 1978, GG-1 4882 pulls in with a string of coaches.
