Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 5634 and CN 2026
Title:  CN 5634 and CN 2026
Description:  A CN container train passes the W. Bell St. overpass and approaches Kampo Rd. (technically no longer Kampo Rd.) as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 9 Apr. '18. A remnant of the former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) runs parallel on the far side of the train. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks. It looks like it might replace an existing turnout for the former C&NW passing siding.

GTW 6226
Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local crosses Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 10 Apr. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The C&NW rails used to cross the road at this gate. Train was returning from Shawano. MillTown Paper, an active rail customer, is partially visible beyond the locomotive. The Essity, formerly SCA Tissue until 14 Jun. '17, warehouse (partially visible background left) has a spur, but does not currently benefit from rail service.

CN 2823, et al.
Title:  CN 2823, et al.
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars approaches N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 2823, CN 287x, CN 2978. The boxcar at left waits to spotted at Eggers Industries. The boxcars at right rest in a small ancillary yard behind Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16). A man in a conspicuity vest is visible between the two cuts of cars at right. His behavior was quite odd. He was doing something near the coupler of NOKL 600005, the car to his left, until he noticed the train approaching. Then he moved to the side of the boxcar and crouched down. I did not notice him after the train cleared the grade crossing.

CN 2895
Title:  CN 2895
Description:  A CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties (near the center of the photograph) rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076.

Title:  CN 2895, CN 3076
Description:  A CN container train passes Arrowhead Park as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076. The Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp. and International Children's Fund, is partially visible background right. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

Description:  An interesting trio of foreigners lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers approaching Dixie Rd. while headed southwest along the CN, former SOO, rails at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 12 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, NS 8077, BNSF 4162, BNSF 9061. The CN completed some significant brush clearing here about a month ago. The large patch of white gravel is a spot that has been recently leveled off in preparation for some upcoming work. I'm standing where the former C&NW right-of-way used to cross the road. Part of the former C&NW main line forms a long passing siding, sometimes referred to as Dixie Siding, at right.

Title:  GTW 5856, et al.
Description:  A through freight and a pair of locals work simultaneously at the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Apr. '18. I was hoping to get closer for a better shot, but before I could get that far, the devious railroad crews thwarted me once again. Nearest local was led by GTW 5856. Through freight had two locomotives, UP 3861 and CN 5454. Didn't catch the road number of the local background right. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, also in use by CN, is at far right. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) bisects the scene.

Description:  A CN through freight approaches the Hwy. G overpass and parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 27 Apr. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails run parallel on the other side of the train.

CN 7027 and a thieving trespasser
Title:  CN 7027 and a thieving trespasser
Description:  A CN local passes a trespasser and approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 29 Apr. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). A few moments earlier, this trespassing thief and her male companion were walking on those tracks, stealing railroad scrap metal. While I was standing near the former SOO rails, in the foreground, waiting to photograph the approaching train, I watched each of them make at least two trips to their car to dump their backpacks full of scrap metal in their trunk. As I was capturing this photograph, the male was standing next to me. He came walking up to me because they were wondering what I was doing. The conversation started something like this. Numb-nuts, “What are you doing?” Me, “I’m standing on the side of a public road, minding my own business. What are you doing?” Mine was an angry, sarcastic, and rhetorical question, anyone could see that they were trespassing and stealing. Numb-nuts, “Me and my girlfriend thought you were acting suspiciously, so we were wondering what you’re up to.” Numb-nuts yammered nonsensically for a minute or two while I attempted to ignore him, hoping he would wander away. At some point Numb-nuts says, “You aren’t going to commit suicide, are you?” I replied, “No. It would be impossible to throw myself under a train here. There won’t be a train coming through on these tracks [the SOO tracks] anytime soon. However, there is a train approaching on those tracks you’ve been walking on [the C&NW tracks]. Oh, and there it is, right behind your girlfriend.” She had noticed it approaching and wisely moved off of the tracks. Numb-nuts continued to mumble gibberish for a few more moments. I continued to ignore him and continued photographing the train. Eventually he wandered off and they both drove away.

Title:  BCOL 4624, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight approaches Harrison St. as it heads south via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI on 30 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, BCOL 4624, GECX 9129, CN 5774. The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel to these tracks just out-of-frame to the right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh. Bemis Oshkosh North, in the City of Oshkosh, is partially visible in the background.

The locomotives are passing a turnout for what is now just a spur for a solitary active rail customer. Not too long ago there were numerous rail customers along that stretch of rail. That track once formed the northern leg of a gigantic loop around the northern half of Oshkosh. I intended to capture a better view of the turnout and spur, but my timing was a little off, obviously.

CN 2404 and CN 5425
Title:  CN 2404 and CN 5425
Description:  A CN container train splits Broad St. and approaches Ceape Ave. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 30 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2404 and CN 5425. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. There was an adjacent grain elevator during some of its service as a flour mill. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. ‘93. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al. Numerous windows have been added or modified over the years and a partial fourth story was removed at some point after ‘19. In the foreground, a lonely reminder of when the north bank of the Fox River teemed with industry and commerce. I didn't know this section of track was still here, until a kindred railfan recently posted a photograph of it (thank you Richard H.). The 2013 bascule bridge over the Fox River, built to replace the 1899 swing bridge, is partially visible background right.

Train had three locomotives, led by BNSF 6696. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible at right. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The beige facility beyond that is Voith (Voith Paper Fabric & Roll Systems, Inc.). The silver silos beyond that belong to Bemis (formerly Curwood, Inc.). The former C&NW rails can be seen at right. A fellow railfan is visible at left.

BNSF 748 and CN 2338
Title:  BNSF 748 and CN 2338
Description:  A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 3 May '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train had two locomotives, BNSF 748 (don't see Warbonnets around here too often) and CN 2338. The former SOO rails are visible beyond the train. The facility in the background has a spur running into it, but the current occupant (since Fall of '06), SERVPRO of Appleton, does not appear to benefit from rail service. The facility was once home to Viking Steel.

Description:  A CN through freight, led by an interesting foreign visitor, parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 4 May '18. The former SOO rails can be seen on this side of the train.

CN 5286
Title:  CN 5286
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (far) side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. Louis J., the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942.

CN 5286
Title:  CN 5286
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. Franklin St. and N. Division St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 May '18. The facility at left is the former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Clark St. The current business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destroyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948. Furnishings unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to ‘81. The building had painted signs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least ‘81. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct. The building in the background is Oneida Heights, 525 N. Oneida St., an apartment complex for seniors. It was built upon the site of several historic, rail served industries near the site of the C&NW depot. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna.

The interesting, old commercial or industrial building at right is 302 S. Story St. It has a sign painted on its front proclaiming it The Train Station. I haven’t been able to find any relevant information regarding its historic or current use. The grass in the foreground was home to the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view.
