Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 2400 and Ferrocarril Mexicano (Feromex) FXE 4687
Title:  CN 2400 and Ferrocarril Mexicano (Feromex) FXE 4687
Description:  CN through freight, assisted by an interesting foreign visitor, parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Snells, WI on 20 Mar. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, can be seen on this side of the train.

CP 8828 and CREX 1504
Title:  CP 8828 and CREX 1504
Description:  An interesting foreigner leads a through freight as it approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 24 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CP 8828 and CREX 1504. There is a spur along the south side of the facility at right, but the turnout was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc., and most recently as extra warehouse space for All About Packaging, Inc.

CSX 98
Title:  CSX 98
Description:  A unit train of 3-bay covered hoppers, powered by an interesting visitor from out-of-town, rests on the CN, former C&NW, siding along W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. at Stroebe, WI on 27 Mar. '18. I rarely see through freights with locomotives running long hood forward, so I thought this locomotive was at the tail end of the train. Then I noticed the crew in the cab and discovered that there was no locomotive at the other end. The former SOO main line is visible at right. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)).

Title:  CN 2420 and CN 2550
Description:  A CN container train passes the W. Bell St. overpass and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 29 Mar. '18. A remnant of the former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) can be seen background left. A new turnout rests between the two sets of tracks. CN 3034 and CN 3002
Title:  CN 3034 and CN 3002
Description:  A CN container train crosses over from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads southwest at Neenah, WI on 30 Mar. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 3034 and CN 3002. Components for a new turnout rest at left. Given that the sun light was neutral, I was hoping to photograph a train approaching Kampo Rd. from the northeast on the main line, for a change. That angle isn't be much good on a sunny afternoon, when I am usually over this way. I positioned myself here when I noticed a train approaching, only to be foiled once again by the crafty crew members of the CN (who decided to cross over to the passing siding instead).

Title:  CN 4711 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it departs the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 5 Apr. '18. Train originated in Neenah, dropped off a string of cars here, and is now headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the '90s and Pete's Junction (possibly Palomino Pete's Junction) ca. the '70s.

Description:  CN local approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails with 14 cars at Stroebe, WI on 5 Apr. '18. Train was on its way back to Neenah from Shawano. Locomotive is passing an awesome, old, wooden crossbuck which guards the currently unused spur for Great Northern Corp. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former C&NW rails are in the foreground.

Wisely erring on the side of caution when they noticed the far signals activate, they realized that there was plenty of room to safely wait here until the local passed by. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background.

NS 8110 and CN 2577
Title:  NS 8110 and CN 2577
Description:  CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers splits Broad St. and approaches Ceape Ave. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 7 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, NS 8110 and CN 2577. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. There was an adjacent grain elevator during some of its service as a flour mill. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. ‘93. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al. Numerous windows have been added or modified over the years and a partial fourth story was removed at some point after ‘19. The 2013 bascule bridge over the Fox River, built to replace the 1899 swing bridge, is visible in the background.

Description:  A CN through freight approaches Dixie Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 8 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 2941, CN 2921, CREX 1510. The CN completed some significant brush clearing here about a month ago, in preparation for some upcoming work. I was standing where the former C&NW right-of-way used to cross the road. Part of the former C&NW main line forms a long passing siding, often referred to as Dixie Siding, at right.

Title:  NS 8077, GECX 7328, NS 1115
Description:  A trio of interesting out-of-towners lead a through freight approaching S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 8 Apr. '18. Train had three locomotives, NS 8077, GECX 7328, NS 1115. Until recently, the building at right had a sign denoting its use by All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops can be seen if you zoom in, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. The All About Packaging, Inc., main facility is a couple of blocks away on W. Everett St.
