PRR 9547, EH-15, 1951

Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken West of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 September 1951. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9547 and two more "EH" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9547 was built as an EH-15 in November of 1948, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15, and retired in December of 1963. They're serving as pushers on a freight train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where these three engines will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." Looks to me like this photo was taken from the last car of a moving eastbound train!

Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #2001 and a "Shark" B-unit whose road number is not recorded. #2001 is a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in June of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower, later rebuilt as an ABF-18 rated at 1,800 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service.

Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #2001, a BF-16 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in June of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower, later rebuilt as an ABF-18 rated at 1,800 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service.

Prominent in the center is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9530 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9530 was constructed in September of 1948. Visible in the background is a portion of Juniata's 8th Street Bridge, with ROSE Tower situated just beyond it.

Dziobko. Here is an image of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 September 1951. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5833 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5833 was built in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're pulling a mail and express train that's paused at the Station for crew changes before heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. William E. In this context, it's parked over the ash pit for the purpose of shaking-out those red-hot clinkers.

Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5831 and #5826. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as 3,000 horsepower BP-60's for passenger service, later regeared and downgraded to 2,500 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service, and retired in September of 1962. #5831 was constructed in January of 1948, while #5826 was built in September of 1948. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9493 and two more "FF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All are FF-16's built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #9493 was built in October of 1950 and retired in April of 1965. Partially visible on the right is PRR engine #5826, a BH-50 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in September of 1948, originally rated as a 3,000 horsepower BP-60 for passenger service, later rebuilt into a 2,500 horsepower BH-50 for freight/helper/pusher service, and retired in Septemberl of 1962. All of these locomotives await their next helper/pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back. Also visible in the background are portions of the 7th Street Bridge and the PRR's Passenger Car Shops.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5699, a K-5 (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during March of 1929 and retired in September of 1953 after 24 years of faithful service. It's just passed under the 12th Street Foot Bridge, and is backing-up toward the 14th Street Interlocking. Visible in the background is the shadow of the trainshed at the Altoona Passenger Station. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5752 and another "PA" Class unit whose number is not recorded. #5752 is an AP-20 built by the American Locomotive Company in October of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, later regeared and reclassified as an AFP-20, and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, they've paused at the Altoona Passenger Station to discharge/pick-up passengers and to change both engine and train crews. Note the railroader at the right who is adjusting the coupler so that the "snapper" can couple on and help pull the train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The buildings in the background are part of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.

It was published originally in his 2006 book entitled "The Pennsy In The 1950's: The Last Great Decade," page 95. Photo Caption: "Crossing shanty at Hollidaysburg, June 11, 1953." This structure is located at the Bedford Street railroad crossing, the only guarded crossing in town. The PRR's Passenger Station is the gray-colored building at the left. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #2004 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are BF-16's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #2004 was constructed in July of 1951 and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service.
