Album Info:For a time in the late 80's and 1990's, I was part of the Southern Tier Division of the RRE. We put out a newsletter, which in those days was done by pasting(literally) photos to an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper and copying as many as we needed for our mailing list. Since color copiers were expensive, we did ours on a standard Xerox type machine. For this effort, I took black and white photos on a sporadic basis. Here are some of the results.

Bearing down
Title:  Bearing down
Description:  Trains coming off the Portage Bridge, about ten miles to the east and a 10 MPH speed restriction, had climbed out of the valley and were usually making a pretty good clip by the time they got to Silver Springs, as this 261 is doing behind a SOO SD 40 and GATX leaser with 54 cars of C/TOFC.

Bath & Hammondsport excursion
Title:  Bath & Hammondsport excursion
Description:  For a short while in the mid 1990s, Bath & Hammondsport ran public trips from Bath to Cohocton on the old DLW main. We see their S 1#5, a frequent participant in these trips, ready to go at Cohocton. The track condition was fairly good, considering the line had been cut as a through route not long after the EL merger, and probably had not had any serious maintenance after that. I rode a train as part of an RRE trip on the line about this time, and we made a good 35-40 MPH on some segments, and the ride was pretty good.

Title:  Onto the main

New and old
Title:  New and old
Description:  CP Horn, once upon a time ZY on the EL, is getting new signals. The new boards Conrail will soon install are turned away, while the erstwhile Erie signals remain in service for a few more months. Once the line east of here is single tracked, the new signals will be cut in, and another vestige of the old order will be gone. In a nod to the old, two of the three units on the train are straight SD 40's.

Description:  The chase road for most of my excursions close to home was NY 17C, which followed the tracks pretty closely from Binghamton to Waverly. We see the X2000 just east of Waverly, where the road is up on a hill. Its a good view, and theres even a semaphore.

Not a station stop
Title:  Not a station stop
Description:  But it would be cool if it were. The only thing is, the train would be at the ex DLW station on the adjacent line, and not likely at the old Erie freighthouse. Ironically, Im standing on the site of the Erie passenger station, which was razed shortly after Conrail startup in 1976. The X2000 train passes on its way to Elmira, looking like an Empire Service Southern Tier train, if there was such a thing.

Quality local
Title:  Quality local
Description:  WABH 11 has a CR Quality repaint GP 40-2 for its chores today. When I moved to the area in 1988, this job had almost always a GP 38 or B23-7. In a few years, the power was upgraded to a GP 40. When NS took over, they assigned a C40-9, then had to upgrade the track on the Vestal Spur, which only saw 4 motor power during Conrails reign. At right, in the "1" shirt, it fellow RRPA contributor Sam Botts.

In this case, its BH 1 with a three builder consist, heading north up the connection from the D&H that was built as part of the Bevier St improvement, where the D&H bridges were raised to allow standard 136" trailers, and the ex DLW bridge used by the NYSW was removed in favor of the new connection.
