Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2018, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 2271
Title:  CN 2271
Description:  A CN container train approaches Dixie Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 19 Jan. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2271 pulling and IC 2710 mid-train. The telephone pole at far left stands along the former C&NW right of way, partially visible through the brush.

CN 2807 and GECX 2042
Title:  CN 2807 and GECX 2042
Description:  CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and approaches the Hwy. G overpass as it head southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 27 Jan. '18. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

BNSF 4092, BNSF 4428, and BNSF 6675
Title:  BNSF 4092, BNSF 4428, and BNSF 6675
Description:  A trio of BNSF units lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers across Dixie Rd., headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 27 Jan. '18. Another unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers, led by a pair of BNSF units and a CN unit, waits to head the opposite direction from Dixie Siding, a remnant of the former C&NW main line. If I had known both trains were led by BNSF units, I would have attempted to capture a decent shot of the meet.

Description:  A CN through freight rests along Hwy. 41 at Snells, WI on 28 Jan. '18. I can't tell if it has halted along the former SOO main line or the former C&NW main line, probably the latter. Title:  CN 2581 and CN 2649
Description:  A CN through freight approaches E. Snell Rd. as it heads north via former SOO rails at Oshkosh, WI on 28 Jan. '18. It is about to cross the ridiculously convoluted border from the City of Oshkosh to one of the remaining scraps of the Town of Oshkosh, WI. When it passes where I was standing, on Snell Rd., it will enter the City of Oshkosh once again. The turnout leads to a pair of rail customers, Bemis and Pacur.

CN 2924 and CN 2896
Title:  CN 2924 and CN 2896
Description:  CN through freight sets out and picks up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Jan. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Title:  BNSF 4526, CN 2562, et al.
Description:  An unusual pair of CN through freights rest on former C&NW main line and siding at Stroebe, WI on 3 Feb. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train at left had two locomotives, BNSF 4526 and CN 2588. Train at right had two locomotives, CN 2562 and CN 2283. Adding to the unusualness, a pair of BNSF units were parked on the crossover from the former SOO rails to the C&NW rails at the northeast end of Stroebe siding.

Description:  After a halt at Stroebe (out-of-frame to left), a CN through freight crosses over from the former C&NW rails to the former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 3 Feb. '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

BNSF 4526 and CN 2588
Title:  BNSF 4526 and CN 2588
Description:  A CN through freight rests amid the ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) on former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 3 Feb. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. It was an unusual afternoon at Stroebe, because another through freight had been halted next to this one up until a few minutes earlier. Adding to the unusualness, a pair of BNSF units were parked on the crossover from the former SOO rails to the C&NW rails at the northeast end of Stroebe siding.

Description:  A pair of BNSF units were oddly parked on the crossover from the former SOO rails (background) to the former C&NW rails (foreground) along W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. at Stroebe, WI on 3 Feb. '18 (both sets of rails in use by CN). Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). A through freight, led by another BNSF unit and a CN unit, rests at the southwest end of the former C&NW siding at Stroebe (out-of-frame to the left). Adding to the unusualness, a second through freight had been halted next to the other one up until a few minutes earlier, with its tail end extending back to here.

Title:  CEFX 1038
Description:  CEFX 1038 was idling away in an unusual spot on CN, former C&NW, rails near Kampo Rd. at Neenah, WI on 3 Feb. '18. It rests on the short siding which is used to service Neenah's Southpark Industrial Center. When I pulled up to park and shoot it, I noticed two carloads of other rail fans photographing this odd occurrence. The SOO rails, also in use by CN, are in the foreground. The W. CN 9455
Title:  CN 9455
Description:  CN local passes the historic Dale feed mill and approaches Main St./Hwy. 96 as it heads northwest via former SOO rails on 10 Feb. '18. The street shows up as Wisconsin Ave. on the satellite map but it is historically Main St. and is listed as such on CN's signal relay case. Hwy. 96 used to be Hwy. 10, until the latter's expansion and relocation ca. '97. The Dale feed mill was built between 1889 and ‘08, when it was Northern Grain Co. By ’10 it was the Western Elevator Co., Western Grain Co. in some references. It was the Steffen’s Elevator Co. from ca. ’21 until at least ’68, it was purchased by John H. Steffens and later run by his sons. It was Dale Feed Service from ca. ’73 until at least ’81. It has been home to Earth Sense Energy Systems, Inc., since ’96. Train was headed for Waupaca.

Title:  GREX 2120
Description:  GREX 2120 DumpTrain® Aggregate Delivery System waits to unload some ballast at the south end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Feb. '18. The hopper cars are permanently coupled together and "empty onto a single conveyor belt that runs the entire length of the train," enabling the transfer car to dump them all in succession. The train is on a remnant of the C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding. The former SOO main line is in the foreground.
