Here are 23 photos that were included in the "Altoona Area Railroad Pictorial History" edited by Ms. Linda White and published in 1996 by The Altoona Mirror. "Neither this book, nor any other, can capture every historical fact or incident pertaining to the railroad. We are simply sharing some of the photographs that mean so much to Altoona and Blair County's history, pictures that people have carefully preserved for themselves and their children." (Page 3). Curiously, there are no photo credits in this "Pictorial History."

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #623, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during July of 1917 and retired in May of 1948 after 31 years of faithful service.

Photo Caption: "Samuel Rea, who was born in Hollidaysburg in 1855, served as president of the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1913 to 1925. He died in 1929." The world's largest railroad car building and repair facility ~ the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania ~ was named in his honor.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3547, an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata during December of 1913 and retired in May of 1951 after 38 years of faithful service.

Photo Caption: "The roundhouse at the Juniata Shops was the largest roundhouse in the world. This photo was taken in the early 1900s. The Pennsylvania Railroad demolished the roundhouse in 1964." The smokestack in the distance belongs to the Roundhouse's power house, located on the the eastern side of this structure. Photo taken from the 17th Street Bridge in Juniata.

Here is a photo that was included in the "Altoona Area Railroad Pictorial History" edited by Linda White and published in 1996 by The Altoona Mirror, page 39. Photo Caption: "M-1 locomotive sits at the northwest corner of the Erecting & Machine Shop in this photo taken in 1957." Given the purported date of this photo, my best guess at the number of this locomotive is PRR engine #6774, an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata during November of 1930, retired in February of 1956, and here being "cannibalized" for parts. Alas....

Description:
Here is a photo that was included in the "Altoona Area Railroad Pictorial History" edited by Linda White and published in 1996 by The Altoona Mirror, pages 50-51. Photo Caption: "The engine 'Altoona' after being rebuilt in the Altoona shops in 1866. It was built by Smith and Perkins of Alexandria, Va., in October 1852 [and] was placed on the Eastern Division in December 1852. It was originally a 2-6-0, but was rebuilt into a 4-6-0, as were others of this type. In the background is the Logan House, while at the left is the St. Charles Hotel, once a famous hostelry in Altoona."

Much of the smoke in the distance emantes from the Pennsylvania Railroad's East Altoona Roundhouse, just beyond the 17th Street Bridge in Juniata. Look at all of that coal, dug from the Earth by Western-Pennsylvania coal miners!
