Here are both covers and a six-page cover article by Mr. Bert Pennypacker entitled "Conquering The Alleghenies in 1923." They were published originally in the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 53, Number 2, 1988, pages 4-9. "The Pennsylvania Railroad's roughgoing Pittsburgh Division once was characterized by a multitude of ponderous I1s Decapods pulling and pushing an immense volume of tonnage along its four-tracked mainline which climbed the Alleghenies on severe gradients." (Page 4)

It was published originally on the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 53, Number 2, 1988. Photo by John Hollingshead. Photo Caption: "Pennsy's massive fleet of 598 class I1s Decapods was built to move heavy tonnage over the Allegheny Mountain grades of central Pennsylvania. But the big 'hippos' were used throughout the railroad's Central Region as far west as mid-Ohio, and later found their way into Eastern Region territory. Although their best documented assignment was hauling Bethlehem Steel ore trains out of Northumberland, Pa., in the mid-1950's, the cover picture shows Altoona-built No. 735 approaching Pittsburgh with what appears to be a U.S. Steel train loaded with Mesabi iron ore from Cleveland or another Lakes port. Altoona turned out the first 123 of the class, beginning with prototype No. 790 in 1916." Engine #735 was built in Juniata during June of 1919 and retired in July of 1951 after 32 years of faithful service.

Partial Caption: "I1s No. 4605, one of 475 workhorse 2-10-0s built by Baldwin for the PRR in 1922-23, takes on a load of bituminous under the coaling facility at Denholm, Pa." Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4605, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1942, and retired in December of 1956 after 33 years of faithful service.

It was published originally on the "National Railway Bulletin," Volume 53, Number 2, 1988. Photo by Bud Rothaar. Photo Caption: "These homely, rough-riding 'hippos' were a sturdy breed. In fact, I1sa Decapods had the distinction of being the last locomotives in steam when Pennsy finally achieved 100-percent diesel and electric operation. In November 1957, Big Steam's last stand in PRR road-haul service was on the iron ore trains headed for the furnaces of Bethlehem Steel at Bethlehem, Pa. Here, Baldwin-built I1sa 4407 doubleheads with a sister 2-10-0 upgrade near Shamokin, Pa., in the mid-1950's. Most likely, two more of their clan are shoving on the rear." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4407 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during January of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1937, and retired in October of 1959 and retired after 36 years.
