Description:
CN local crosses what used to be Stribley Rd. and parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 20 Jun. '17. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). What used to be Stribley Rd. is now just a driveway to the trailer storage lot. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter. Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the restoration of the original Thilmany mill (out of frame to left) and the creation of its new parking lot.

CN 8841 and CN 2195
Description:
A southbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 25 Jun. '17. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW’s South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track. The new bascule bridge over the Fox River is visible at right, it was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge.

Description:
A CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers crosses E. Parkway Ave. and parallels Broad St. as it heads south via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 25 Jun. '17. This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to shoot it from the other side of the tracks in order to avoid all of the telephone poles.

CN 4705 and CN 9473
Description:
CN local sorts cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Jul. '17. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.

Description:
CN unit train of tank cars approaches the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Jul. '17. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are next to the WC 2-bay covered hopper. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16), looms background left. Train had three locomotives, CN 3019 and CN 2821 pulling as well as CN 8101 pushing.

CN unit train of tank cars passes the Main St. over pass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Jul. '17. The east leg of the wye is partially visible beyond the train. The white building at left is Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Train had three locomotives, CN 3019 and CN 2821 pulling as well as CN 8101 pushing.

Title:
CN 4100
Description:
CN local services the immense Verso Corp. paper mill at Wisconsin Rapids, WI on 4 Jul. '17. Incorporated as the Consolidated Water Power Co. on 16 July 1894; it was formed through the merger of 6 industries using the Grand Rapids of the Wisconsin River for water power. Intending to expand into paper making, the name was changed to Consolidated Water Power & Paper Co. in ‘02. The original part of the paper mill and an adjacent 2,000-ft. dam were completed in '04. Paper production commenced on 3 Jun. ’04, on “the world’s first electrically powered paper machines.” Decades of growth and expansion added mills at Biron, Appleton, Stevens Point, and Whiting, in WI, plus Port Arthur, Ontario, and other facilities. The name was changed to Consolidated Papers, Inc., in '62. Nearly 4 more decades of family-owned growth, expansion, and innovations to the paper manufacturing process followed, until it was sold to Stora Enso Oyj, Finland, in Aug. '00. In '07, Stora Enso sold six paper mills to Cerberus Capital Management LP, which created NewPage Holdings, Inc., Miamisburg, OH. Verso Paper Corp., Memphis, TN, acquired paper mills in Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Duluth, and Escanaba, from NewPage on 7 Jan. ’15. My dad helped design and install some Valmet machinery in this historic facility while it was still Consolidated Papers. I believe these are former MILW rails, but old maps suggest that the GB&W, SOO, and C&NW could have also served this facility.

CN train backs into the former C&NW and SOO yards at Wisconsin Rapids, WI on 4 Jul. '17. Both roads had parallel yards here, approximately 4 tracks each ca. 1973. Both roads used to cross the GB&W behind me. The track on the left has been truncated at the street, but it used to form the northwest quadrant of the junction. A junction of the MILW and GB&W was nearby (to the right) as well. This portion of Wisconsin Rapids, formerly Grand Rapids, was known as West Rapids, shortened to Westrap on some old maps and railroad documents.

Both roads used to cross the GB&W just out of frame to the left. A junction of the MILW and GB&W was not far behind me. This portion of Wisconsin Rapids, formerly Grand Rapids, was known as West Rapids, shortened to Westrap on some old maps and railroad documents. I'm curious to learn where the old signal relay case at right used to rest. Milepost CM 412.75 at Hwy. K obviously, but there is no Hwy. K near here. The Hwy. K grade crossing at Bateman in Eau Claire Co., WI is a possibility.

'17. It was founded as Nekoosa Paper Co. in 1893 at Nekoosa, WI (originally known as Pointe Basse). Their first paper machine had been built by the Beloit Iron Works and displayed at the Chicago World’s Fair in '92, “where it was shown to the world as a model paper machine.” Nekoosa Paper Co. merged with the John Edwards Manufacturing Co. (including the John Edwards Paper Mill and possibly the Port Edwards Fibre Co.) and Nash Lumber Co. to form the Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co. (NEPCO) in '08. Some references list the Centralia Pulp & Water Power Co. as part of that merger; other references state it was purchased several years later. Most of those entities had been founded by the same group of industrialists. Both paper mills were served by the MILW, SOO, and C&NW, but ca. '10 NEPCO laid a fourth set of rails so that they could easily move materials between Port Edwards and Nekoosa with their own locomotives as well. NEPCO merged with the Great Northern Paper Co. in '70 to become Great Northern Nekoosa Corp. They were acquired by Georgia-Pacific in '90. The facility has been operated by Domtar, Inc., since 2001. The locomotive was built in Oct. '49 as ALM 10, later renumbered ALM 1001. Sold to Georgia-Pacific to become G-P 1001 and later sold to Domtar, Inc.

Description:
CIRR 2643 was 1 of a couple of dozen interesting, old freight cars spotted on former MILW rails behind Nekoosa Corp. at Nekoosa, WI on 4 Jul. '17. Nekoosa Corp. primarily serves the pulp and paper industry, but they serve agriculture, food processing, chemical and sand & gravel industries as well. It does not appear as if they currently receive regular rail service.

UP Coal Train
Description:
A UP coal train rests on the CN siding west of Hwy. GG at Mentone, WI, or Whitt, WI, in the Town of Cranmoor, Wood Co., WI, on 4 Jul. '17. The main line is former MILW, but was operated jointly by MILW and C&NW for some time according to some old maps. The location is listed as Mentone on some older maps, but is listed as Whitt on CN's station map (North Whitt according to the signal relay case). The old siding at Mentone was on the other side of the road (behind me). According to information found on trainweb.org, the current siding was built ca. '10 to hold UP coal trains waiting to head to the power plant at Weston, WI.

A heavily powered CN local approaches Letendre Ave./Hwy. 73 as it heads south via former MILW rails at Port Edwards, WI, on 4 Jul. '17. The abandoned SOO right-of-way runs parallel and about 150' to the east (right), the abandoned C&NW right-of-way, now a paved recreational trail, runs parallel and about 50' beyond that.

Description:
A heavily powered CN local shoves its train across Hwy. 73 and into the yards of Domtar's abandoned Port Edwards, WI paper mill (historically Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co.) via former MILW rails at Nekoosa Junction, WI, on 4 Jul. '17. The paper mill, built in 1896 by the John Edwards Manufacturing Co., was served by the MILW, SOO, C&NW, and Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co., so there are 4 yards here. Domtar acquired the facility in '01 and threw 500 Americans out of work in '08. The facility sat abandoned until '13, when Domtar sold it to DMI Acquisitions, LLC, a vague entity which acquires idle industries to strip them of anything salvageable. They claim to be committed to finding new industrial tenants to occupy the facility and take advantage of the extensive rail infrastructure. Some references promise that, with 7-figure assistance from Wisconsin taxpayers, 800 new jobs will replace the 500 that were lost. Time will tell.

A heavily powered CN local shoves its train across Wilhorn Rd. as it services ERCO Worldwide (historically BASF Wyandotte), 101 Hwy. 73 S., Nekoosa, WI (physically located in Port Edwards, WI) via former SOO rails at Nekoosa, WI, on 4 Jul. '17. The border between the two cities is about 100' N. of Wilhorn Rd. The gravel road leading to the right runs along the former MILW right-of-way. There are remnants of MILW, C&NW, and Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co. rails still in use in the vicinity, the four railroads ran side-by-side between the two cities.

Description:
A heavily powered CN local services ERCO Worldwide, 101 Hwy. 73 S., Nekoosa, WI (physically located in Port Edwards, WI) via former SOO rails at Nekoosa, WI, on 4 Jul. '17. The ERCO Worldwide facility partially visible in the background was built by Wyandotte Chemical, construction began in the spring of 1966 and it became operational in '67. Purchased by BASF in '69 or '70, it was known as BASF Wyandotte. Purchased in '80 by Vulcan Materials Co. for their Chemical Division (their Chem. Div. was named Vulcan Chemicals in '81). Occidental Chemical purchased Vulcan Chemicals from Vulcan Materials in '05. An FTC-imposed condition on the sale allowed Occidental to acquire Vulcan’s facilities at Geismar, LA, and Wichita, KS, but they were required to immediately sell the Port Edwards facility, which was purchased by Canada-based ERCO Worldwide. The facility currently produces chemicals for use by pulp/paper, food processing, agriculture, electronic, de-icing, petroleum and water treatment facilities. The tank cars at left rest upon the SOO branch from Wisconsin Rapids to Nekoosa, the locomotives and the remainder of the train are crossing over to the former C&NW branch between the two cities. They are descending the grade from the main line down to the banks of the Fox River in order to service the large Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). Looking northwest from the intersection of Oviatt St. and Seymour St. By simply rotating about 75 degrees to the right while standing at this intersection, I was able to capture the next photograph of this local crossing the Oviatt St. grade crossing.

CN local bisects the Appvion, Inc., formerly Appleton Papers, Inc., paper mill, and approaches N. Meade St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 8 Jul. '17. Founded 13 May 1907 as the Appleton Coated Paper Co., it operated as such until it was acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in '70 and united with Combined Mills to form Appleton Papers, Inc., in '71. Numerous changes in ownership occurred over the years until the employees purchased the company in '00 and changed the name to Appleton in '03. The company adopted its current moniker on 13 May ’13. The facility has a spur on each side of the main line. Train was headed back toward Neenah.

CN 80350 was 1 of 5 Water Transporters at the head end of a CN through freight slowing to halt along Union St. as it headed north at north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jul. '17. The white building behind the train is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.
