Here are both covers and the complete contents of a 64-page booklet published by Mr. Harry P. Albrecht entitled "World Famous Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Pennsylvania Railroad." It was issued originally during September of 1973. "Altoona . . . a magic name that conveys instantly to the minds of many individuals in American and foreign countries the famous shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad located at that point . . . a massed assembly of men and materials of whom it can be truly said . . . 'Altoona Works can make or repair anything necessary for the operation of a railroad.'" (Page 1)

Here is page five of a 64-page booklet published by Harry P. Albrecht entitled "World Famous Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Pennsylvania Railroad." It was first issued in September of 1973. Photo Caption: "An eastbound freight, with engine No. 222, appears to be awaiting a 'clear board' so that it may proceed and work its way down the 'hill' to Altoona, sometime about the late 1860ies." Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #222, a Class D (4-6-0) "Ten-Wheeler" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during 1861 and retired in June of 1872 after just 11 years of revenue service. Note the Head-End Brakeman sitting atop the first car of the train.

Here is page six of a 64-page booklet published by Harry P. Albrecht entitled "World Famous Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Pennsylvania Railroad." It was first issued in September of 1973. Photo Caption: "This is sometime in the 1870ies when there were only two tracks on the Curve. Looking westbound, we can see the original Curve tower which controlled the switching operations at Kittanning Point. The engine, No. 751, was an early Consolidation Type Class 'H' locomotive." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #751 is an H-1 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata during November of 1879 and sold to Torbert & Peckham in May of 1902.

Note that there are three tracks rounding the Curve in this photo, so it was taken prior to 1900 when the fourth track was added.

Photo Caption: "This picture, looking westbound, was taken about 1921. Locomotives were serviced at Kittanning Point just prior to traversing the Curve or descending the 'hill' to Altoona from about 1900 or earlier. Here are the servicing facilities ~ water tower, coal trestle, etc. Note that the standpipes are mounted on the bridge below the semaphores. It is over this bridge that small coal cars carried coal to the tenders."

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4527 and #6768. #4527 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during August of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in November of 1942, and retired in June of 1953. #6768 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata in September of 1930 and retired in February of 1955. Here is page 32 of a 64-page booklet published by Harry P. Albrecht entitled "World Famous Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Pennsylvania Railroad." It was first issued in September of 1973. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #348, an H-6 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in the Altoona Machine Shops during September of 1899, renumbered "2004" in March of 1924, and retired in July of 1926 after 27 years of faithful service. It's hauling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Note the two-bore tunnel at the base of the Burgoon Run fill.
