Album Info:For several years, NS ran 41T on the Tier. The train originated at Enola, ran the ex PRR and D&H to Binghamton, then west to Buffalo and Toronto. It usually had CN power, including IC and WC units. I was driving for Broome County Transit at the time, working split shifts, which left the middle of my days open. This was usually a good match for 41T, which tended to get out of Binghamton mid day, and made for a good chase. It became 31T in March 2004 or so, continuing to run the Tier, though later the routing would change to a CP-D&H move north of Binghamton, ending my Tier chases of the train. It was good while it lasted. We'll also see some shots of the train south of Binghamton on the line to Scranton.

Cresting the grade
Title:  Cresting the grade
Description:  40T, today with a pair of NS units, an unusual circumstance for this train, crests the short, steep pull south of Hallstead. The DLW once had a "low grade" here that freights used. The 24 cars on todays train will not tax the power much, though bigger trains really work here.

From the connector
Title:  From the connector
Description:  After many years of dithering about where to locate the bridge, NYSDOT finally decided to site a Susquehanna crossing at exit 66 on NY 17, the Apalachin exit. This turned out to be a good thing for me, as it eliminated the need for me to have to go through Endicott most of the time, and also provided a good place to get a shot of a westbound, such as this 41T rolling toward Owego.

Underway
Title:  Underway
Description:  31T rolls west over the Chenango River on the DLW bridge as it clears downtown and heads for Buffalo with 71 cars. This view highlights the concrete construction the DLW was noted for. The arches on the approach are typical reinforced concrete. The adjacent Erie bridge was(and is) steel. The red brick building to the right of the train is Derby Knitting Mills, which would burn to the ground in a spectacular fire ten years hence.

Last shot
Title:  Last shot
Description:  This was the last shot I got of that 31T. West of Hornell, he really took off, and I had a hard time keeping up, since he had 50 MPH, and I had to get through Canisteo and Hornell, a challenge to start with, then deal with 40 MPH at Arkport, 30 at Canaseraga, and hope to stay close. I beat him here, but that was the end. I could have beat him to Silver Springs, but it was getting late and I had to be at work the next morning by 6.

Description:  There had been a washout near this location several years prior, and the track had all been rebuilt. 31T is taking advantage of the new track, though the curvature in the valley is such that it wont make a lot of speed anyway. Description:  31T made its crew change at East Binghamton, and has now crossed the Susquehanna and is on the NS Tier. We see it at Liberty St at the start of the trip to Buffalo. The two tracks in the foreground, now the Johnson runner and the stub of track 4, were once the DLW east and westbound main tracks. This is also the approximate location of Liberty St tower. A track from the DLW station, out of view to the left, to the Syracuse and Utica Branches, crossed the Erie here.

The corn is down
Title:  The corn is down
Description:  31T rolls past Hiawatha Rd in Owego following the corn harvest, leaving the field with only stubble. Now I wont have to stand on the roof of the car to get the shot over the corn.

Multi modal
Title:  Multi modal
Description:  Not in the way youd expect. 30T sits at the ex DLW station waiting for a crew, while a Broome Transit bus crosses overhead on Chenango St. Its either a 28-Robinson St or 40-Chenango St; both use Chenango out of downtown, with the 28 turning onto Robinson to head to the end of the line at the Binghamton Psych Center. The 28 was good for seeing the action at Bevier St, since it also did a loop up Broad Av in both directions. Many a morning I watched NS 206 while on that run. The bus is one of the 23 Orion 6 coaches acquired by BC Transit in 2000.

Say what??
Title:  Say what??
Description:  In a turn reminiscent of Macys sending Christmas shoppers to Gimbels, a unit from CPs empire leads a train that will connect to the CN at Buffalo. SOO power was unheard of on 30T/31T, so this was quite unusual.
