PC Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John W. Stubblefield that was taken near Maroa, Illinois, on 27 February 1968. Shown here (R to L) are Penn Central engines #4352 and another unit whose number is not recorded. Both are FP7A's built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #4352 was constructed as Pennsylvania Railroad number "9852" in June of 1952 and renumbered "4352" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, they're rockin' 'n' rollin' in open country with a mixed-cargo freight train. Many thanks to Mr. Mark Branibar for correctly identifying both the photographer and the location.

PC Power. Here is an original photo that I took at the Penn Central Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1968. Shown here are PC engines #6171, #2330, and another unit whose number is not recorded. #6171 is an SD45 built by GM-EMD in December of 1967 and rated at 3,600 horsepower. #2330 is a GP35 built by GM-EMD in January of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are pulling an eastbound mixed-cargo freight train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve to Altoona and points East. Wave to the engineman!

PC 1423, F3A, c. 1968
Description:
PC Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of Penn Central Railroad engine #1423, an F3A built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad as EH-15 number "9686" in February of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and renumbered "1423" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. The best one can say about this situation is "Oops!" The photographer's name, the date, and the location are not recorded. According to Mr. Mark Branibar, the location is most likely the former New York Central yards in Sharonville, Ohio.

Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #4352 is an FP7A built as Pennsylvania Railroad number "9852" in June of 1952 and renumbered "4352" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. #1514 is an F7A built as PRR number "9814" in April of 1951 and renumbered "1514" in for the merger. In this context, they're pulling some empty hopper cars up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Looks to me like they've both seen better days! PC Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Fred Byerly that was taken near Burlington, New Jersey, c. 1969. Photo Caption: "Lima 1200-hp. (EMD engines), PC #8062. Burlington, N.J." Penn Central #8062 is an LRS-1200 built by Lima-Hamilton as New York Central Railroad number "5810" in September of 1950, rated at 1,200 horsepower, later rebuilt with a GM-EMD prime mover, and renumbered "8062" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Fairbanks-Morse and Lima Diesels ~ Eastern and Canadian Roads" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (902-58).

Shown here is Penn Central Railroad engine #8378, a DS 4-4-660 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Pennsylvania Railroad as number "9032" in May of 1949, rated at 660 horsepower, and remumbered "8378" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. According to Mr. Mark Branibar, "DS44-660 #8378 was the former PC (PRR paint) 7882, which was the former PRR 9032. Never received PC paint. This was as far as it got before retirement on February 21, 1971."

Shown here (L to R) are PC engines #9035, #9020, and #2436. #9035 is an SW7 built by GM-EMD in May of 1950 and rated at 1,200 horsepower; its original PRR number was "9365." #9020 is a SW1200 built by GM-EMD in November of 1957 and rated at 1,200 horsepower; its original PRR number was "7920." #2436 is a C425 built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower; its original PRR number was the same. PC Power. Here is an original photo that I took of a Penn Central Railroad locomotive in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during March of 1972. Shown here is PC engine #6970, an AS616 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton for the Pennsylvania Railroad as number "8970" in June of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. By the looks of it, this locomotive ~ now renumbered "6970" ~ has been sold for scrap and is awaiting shipment to its final destination. Photo taken near the intersection of Allegheny and Blair Streets, next to the AIRCO Plant.

Shown here (F to R) are PC engines #6121, #8071, and another unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #6121 is an SD45 built in October of 1966 and rated at 3,600 horsepower; its original PRR number was the same. #8071 is a GP38-2. They are passing the Altoona Passenger Station with a long string of hopper cars that they have brought down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve from Gallitzin and points West. The large structure in the distance is the former Pennsylvania Railroad Test Plant; a bit further to the right is the 17th Street Bridge; in the far distance are the eastern slopes of the Allegheny Mountains. PC Power. Here is an original photo that I took of a Penn Central Railroad train near Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, on 05 June 1975. Shown here are PC engines #6278 and #2297. Both were built by GM-EMD. #6278 is an SD40, while #2297 is a GP35. They are pulling an eastbound merchandise freight (with autoracks) and are about to cross State Route 829 ~ just off of US Route 22, East of Huntingdon. The mountains of the Juniata River Valley dominate the background.
