Description:  Texas & Pacific P-1-b-r class 4-6-2 712 was being serviced at the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans’ RACE STREET YARD. The loco had been built by Baldwin (61291) in December 1919, and was modernized in October 1940. Some evidence of the upgrading was a complete set of disc drivers, a slanted cab front, an extended turret and a big tender from a retired 2-10-2; but the improvements also included roller bearings on the driver axles, lightweight side rods, multiple-bearing crossheads and a valve pilot. It was retired in February 1953. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Train No. 12
Title:  L&N Train No. 12
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 253 was leading train number 12 along Elysian Fields Avenue at Chartres Street. Number 12 was the daily-except-Sunday commuter run to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The train had a 5:15 PM departure from Canal Street Station, and it was just a few minutes into its 2-hour-20-minute trip. The train's first car is in the new (post-war) blue paint scheme, while the other cars are in the older green scheme.

At this time, the L&N had five tracks on the median of Elysian Fields from the Mississippi River to Tonti Street. The two tracks on the right previously belonged to the Pontchartrain Railroad. Mississippi River wharves are visible beyond the crossing tower at Decatur Street.

The 253 was one of 18 K-4B class Pacifics (246-263) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1920 and 1922. It was built in 1921 and retired on 16 October 1951. (approximate day of photo)

Between 1902 and 1954 SP trains used the Illinois Central’s UNION STATION, and No. 7 was seen here running over the IC near Southport Junction, on its way to the Huey P. Long Bridge. This train included three express cars, a Railway Post Office and three coaches. The ALAMO was discontinued in December 1952, and the 629 was scrapped in January 1954. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  In 1951-52 the Louisville & Nashville constructed a shoo-fly at Franklin Avenue in New Orleans, about midway between NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7) and N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7), so that an underpass could be built there. Southbound local No. 7 had just crossed the main line of the Southern Railway at NO&NE Tower, which can be seen in the left background, and was at the north end of the temporary trackage, passing a temporary approach signal for the New Orleans Terminal Co. crossing at N.O.T. Tower. This train was powered by K-5 class Pacific 280, built by Alco’s Brooks Works in 1924; and included a sleeping car on the rear, an unusual occurrence. New FP7 diesels officially replaced steam power on No. 7, as well as 9, 10 and 12, on 27 July 1951, the underpass was dedicated on 16 April 1952, No. 7 was discontinued in 1953 and the 280 was retired on 23 April 1954. Bisso 0-6-0 1
Title:  Bisso 0-6-0 1
Description:  Former Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans (TPMPT) 0-6-0 number 1 was photographed in September 1951 at its new home, the New Orleans Coal & Bisso Towboat Co. The loco – and its sibling No. 2 – had been built by Alco-Richmond in June 1907 (42928-42929) as Trinity & Brazos Valley 75 and 76, for use at Galveston; but following the T&BV’s bankruptcy in 1914, the railroad lost its access to Galveston from Fort Worth over the Santa Fe and the two switchers became redundant.

The City of Houston bought the two locomotives via the Barry Equipment Co. in 1917 and they arrived on 31 March lettered Houston Municipal 1 and 2. They were leased to the International & Great Northern from March 1918 until October 1921, and were sold to Grant Locomotive and Car Works [of Houston] in1922. They subsequently moved to the TP-MPT where they retained their previous numbers.

In early 1948 the TP-MPT received four Alco S2 diesels, and the 0-6-0’s were sold to Bisso by August 1949. Besides operating coal-burning towboats and ferries, Bisso also provided coal for other vessels and used its locos to move hopper cars from a 2-track yard along the New Orleans Public Belt then up the Mississippi River levee to its coal-handling facility along the river. Bisso’s coaling operation ended around 1955, and with it, the need for any locomotives. No. 1 disappeared, and was probably scrapped; but No. 2 remained on Bisso property until 2010, when it was donated to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  Louisville & Nashville local Number 7 has just passed through Gentilly Yard (milepost 800.4) and crossed the Industrial Canal drawbridge (milepost 801.4). The train was scheduled into New Orleans at 3:45 P.M., after a 12-hour trip from Montgomery, Alabama. It was established in 1946 and discontinued in September 1953. The switch in the foreground was the connection with the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, at the north end of the GM&O's Canal Yard.

The train was powered by K-5 class 4-6-2 245. This was one of six light Pacifics (240-245) assigned to the L&N by the United States Railroad Administration during the First World War. These were built by Alco-Richmond in 1919, after the end of the War. After the USRA was abolished, the railroad got 20 more K-5's: Baldwin built eight (264-271) in 1923 and Alco-Brooks constructed 12 (272-283) in 1924. The 245 was retired on 22 June 1954. L&N Mikado 1514
Title:  L&N Mikado 1514
Description:  After having set off its through freight at GENTILLY YARD, Louisville & Nashville J-3 class Mikado 1514 leads an auxiliary water car, a box car, and a caboose southbound across Canal Street. The box car is probably LCL (less-than-carload freight) consigned to Acme Fast Freight. After Work War II – and lasting into the early diesel era – it was common for freight trains to leave most of their cars at GENTILLY, and then bring their LCL and perishable cars all the way to JULIA STREET YARD. The vehicles on the right are waiting to board the Mississippi River ferry to the suburb of Algiers. (approximate date of photo)
