Title:  Lite power
Description:  During this time, there were a lot of coal trains. These would get DPUs southbound, but not all the units would return on the same train sets, leading to an imbalance of power. KCS would then send the units north in a lite power move, sometimes as many as a dozen. One of these moves is northbound at CP Flint Creek with lease power leading an eclectic mix.

Description:  One of the more challenging shots in the area is this shot of a northbound passing the signal at Roller Av in Decatur, just north of the station. The Simmons plant keeps the tracks in shadow much of the afternoon, but during the longer days of summer, its possible to get this shot with the power and signal lit up. Because the angle is low by then, it makes for an attractive shot. We see a northbound 84 car H train.

Description:  Usually, with a southbound, if I shot him at the north end of Dorsey, I couldnt beat him to Gentry, though sometimes especially heavy trains would bog down coming into Decatur, and again on the short hump at MP 219. The 82 cars must have been really holding them back, as I was able to get this shot at Floyd Moore Rd, just north of Gentry.

Description:  Gravette can be a challenge, especially late in the afternoon. There is an open area to the west of the tracks where they go through downtown, but shrubbery and trees have made it impossible to get a clear shot of more than two units. I got this from the embankment leading to the Ark 72 overpass, just catching the light right on this northbound 61 car grain train.

Description:  A good photo location is alongside Ark 59, just north of where it passes under Ark 102. Theres a nice long S curve there thats reasonably open, and makes a good morning shot. I was able to catch this southbound grain train a bit later in the day, the light working due to the overcast. The snow helped, and this shot made a good Christmas card.

Description:  A pair of gray AC44s roll 75 empty cars north a few miles south of Decatur. I worked for JB Hunt at the time, who is a big user of intermodal. All their rail partners have contributed models, which are displayed in the main lobby. The KCS model has this unit, 4592, leading a set of stack cars. Its painted in the Belle scheme. In a case of art not imitating life, the prototype, seen here, is still gray.
