Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Penn Central Locomotive Shop's storage yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 2 February 1975. Among the many locomotives parked here is Amtrak engine #320 (at left), an E8A built as Pennsylvania Railroad number "5714" in October of 1952, rated at 2,250 horsepower, renumbered "4314" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger, and renumbered "320" by Amtrak. Also visible is ex-New York Central engine #4066, an E8A built in June of 1953. From the George Povall Collection.

Description:  Amtrak. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken from the 4th Street Footbridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 July 1995. Prominent here is Amtrak engine #406, an F-40PHR built by GM-EMD in January of 1988 and rated at 3,200 horsepower. In this context, it's just departed the Altoona Passenger Station with a four-car passenger train bound for Harrisburg and points East. At the same time, three Conrail diesel-electric locomotives built by GM-EMD are departing the Westbound Classification Yard with a freight train bound for Conway. Note the two iterations of the 7th Street Bridge in the distance: the old and the new!
