Album Info:UP's Cache Valley branch starts at MP 0.2 at Cache Jct. Utah and runs in a "U" shape to Preston, ID, MP 50.8. The valley got its name from French trappers who cached beaver pelts here in the 1820's. The Cache Valley was settled by the Mormons in 1859...farming, grazing and dairy made up the economy. The Utah Northern began construction in the valley in the early 1870's. Sugar Beets became the prominent crop and the railroad kept busy hauling inbound coal and limestone to the sugar factories and outbound beets, sugar, perishables and evaporated milk. After WWII, the beet business was in decline, ceasing in 1979. At the time of these photos, the Cache Valley local would leave Cache Jct. on Monday's and spent the rest of the week working to Preston and Cache Jct. on alternate days returning each evening to Logan. On Fridays it returned to Cache Jct. In the 1990's, traffic consisted of outbound wheat, inedible beef tallow and empty tin cans. Inbound traffic included plastic pellets and cardboard. Interestingly, the route of the Ogden, Logan & Idaho interurban line closely followed the Cache Valley branch from Mendon to Preston.
