Album Info:Here are five original photos that I took of a single Penn Central Railroad locomotive shifting freight cars on the Westbound Hump in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during August of 1972. As part of a modernization program begun in 1903, the Pennsylvania Railroad built a roundhouse, west- and eastbound receiving and classification yards, as well as a passenger station in Hollidaysburg. All were very busy places, especially during the two World Wars ~ but virtually all of it has been torn down or torn up in recent years.

Shown here is PC engine #9020, an SW-1200 built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in 1957 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. It is shifting a gondola car at the eastern end of the Westbound Hump at the base of Bald Hill, next to US Route 22. Also visible are the PC's Samuel Rea Shop on the left and the town of Hollidaysburg on the right.

It is shifting a gondola car at the eastern end of the Westbound Hump at the base of Bald Hill, next to US Route 22. In the days of the Pennsylvania Railroad, this engine was numbered "7920"; builder's number: 24152.

In this artsy-shot using the rear-view mirror of my Datsun 240-Z, #9020 is at the very top of the Westbound Hump. In olden days, there was a two-storey Hump Tower located there.
