Album Info:Thanks for visiting my Wisconsin & Southern Album. My photos are somewhat limited as I moved out of state in 1987 and was only able to shoot the WSOR on vacation trips back to Wisconsin. In 1980, the Milwaukee Road was looking to abandon it's branchline system in eastern Wisconsin. Wisconsin Department of Transportation purchased these lines and awarded Funding Systems Railcars (FSC) the operating contract in April, 1980. On July 1, 1980, the WSOR began operations over the cluster of lines radiating out of Horicon, WI. The WSOR's 147 mile system served 139 customers in 30 communities spread throughout 8 counties. By 1985, the WSOR had completed track rehabilitation on nearly it's entire system. In the late 1980's, the WSOR's parent company, Northbrook Corporation, was having financial problems and in 1988, the railroad was sold to Bill Gardner. Gardner had just sold the family business, Gardner-Bender for $31 million and had a large nest egg of capital available. Within a year of Gardner's arrival, traffic doubled to 15,000 cars. Marketing efforts were increased, track was upgraded, additional maintenance equipment was purchased and more locomotives acquired. In August, 1992 WSOR's parent company acquired the common stock of the Wisconsin & Calumet and the railroad tripled in size and gained access to Chicago. Since the early beginnings, the WSOR has grown to a 700 mile regional railroad handling 60,000 cars annually.
