Night BUOI
Title:  Night BUOI
Description:  BUOI is stopped at the office in Binghamton, adjacent to the old Erie freight house. I took the opportunity to get a shot of a rare unit on the Tier, C32-8 6611. These units were almost exclusive to the River and Boston Lines, as they were based out of Selkirk. This one got to Oak Island and strayed.

B boats
Title:  B boats
Description:  This would be a common power consists coming out of Oak Point for the transfer to the LIRR. Not so much out of Oak Island on a road train. A trio of B23-7s work at Binghamton with OIBU. This view gives a good overview of the Erie station area. The cars are parked on the site of the Erie passenger station, a large building that was razed shortly after CR took over the Tier. The brick building seen under the Chenango St bridge is the old Erie freight house, which itself would come down in 1999.

OIBU around the curve
Title:  OIBU around the curve
Description:  After a long more or less straight run along the George F Highway from JC, the railroad took a hard turn to the right as it entered Endwell. This was a 45 MPH curve in EL days, when the speed here was 50. A pair of new C40-8Ws roll into it as they head for Elmira and Buffalo.

Pulling
Title:  Pulling
Description:  OIBU has gotten back on his train and is now starting to pull its 50 cars west. We have here a good view of the station area. The concrete pad behind the lead unit is the location of the Erie station. Under the middle of the overpass is the Erie freight house, the red brick building. It will be torn down in 1999. In the right background, we see the station tower on the DLW station, as well as the steel frame of the Marconi tower, which was used to mount an antenna for an early radio application. To the left of the radio tower, we see the smokestack for the station powerhouse, which not only provided heat for the station, but also for the steam lines that heated the set out cars that were dropped or picked up here.

Title:  Starting over the bridge
Description:  The steelwork for the Chenango River bridge actually starts before the tracks are at the river bank, as the structure also vaults over Water St before reaching the water. OIBU is on this part of the bridge as we look up, about to cross the Chenango, and head out the west side.

Working Goudy
Title:  Working Goudy
Description:  The main activity on the Vestal Spur, the remaining piece of the DLW west of Binghamton, was the NYSEG Goudy Generating Station, which got 90 or so cars twice weekly. The coal would come in on UNG trains, which dropped the loads at Binghamton. WABH 11 would get the task of switching out the plant. Since CR assigned a single 4 motor unit to that job-they didnt allow 6 axle units on the spur, it would take the cars down in 45 car cuts, and work the plant solo. It could be an all day affair for the local, since the plant yard was oddly configured, and there was a lot of see sawing to get loads in, and empties out. Thats the NY 201 overpass above the train.

Gas station grab
Title:  Gas station grab
Description:  BUOI rolls its 48 cars out of the curve at Endwell, starting along the George F Highway. I was getting gas at the Hess station there. Hearing the train blow for Avenue B, just to the west, I was able to grab my camera and get the shot. That gas station is a used car lot now. It was a great place to stop for gas if you needed to keep an eye on the tracks.

Putting it away
Title:  Putting it away
Description:  WABH 11 puts its train away, spotting cars to be picked up by the road trains to be taken to far away places. Note the signal mast: it is now bereft of signals. This mast once carried the distant signal for CP Johnson(formerly West BD), where the old DLW tied into the Tier, an arrangement completed by the Erie and Lackawanna in 1959. Now there is one long block between BD and Johnson. In a few more years, the mast itself will come down, and one of the more recognizable parts of the EL in Binghamton will be gone. The Erie freight house, at right, will last til 1999 before it, too, becomes a memory.

Making him wait
Title:  Making him wait
Description:  Conrail was not shy about making the D&H wait on the Tier, but occasionally practicality and common sense won out. Today is one of those days, as BUME rolls 49 cars through West BD on track 2, headed for East Binghamton, while an XCL empty coal train cools its heels on the former DLW, having come out track 3 from downtown with 35 hoppers for Clearfield PA. That's the Vestal Spur in the lower right corner, the remaining portion of what was the DLW's 70 MPH main line. It now runs a few miles out to Vestal to serve the few remaining local customers.

Underway
Title:  Underway
Description:  The XCL train starts west, having gotten the board now that CP has cleared. It will be a gloomy trip to Gang Mills, as the typical Southern Tier gloom is hanging low. That lumpy track at right is the Vestal Spur. When NS got the line in the 1999 split, it started running C40-9's on that line-like it did everywhere else. By 2002, it bit the bullet and spent a bunch of money on ties and resurfacing, which it sorely needed after years of Conrail running heavy coal trains on it to the NYSEG power plant several times a week, but doing virtually no maintenance. The light building at far right is the NY State office building, affectionately known as the "SOB". It had a fire in the basement in 1981, and was unoccupied for 15 years while the PCB's released from electrical equipment were cleaned up. It was the poster child for government efficiency in NY.

By the station
Title:  By the station
Description:  Or where it used to be. OIBU and today's 51 cars pull up to the place where the Erie station once stood, and where I am standing now. It was a large structure, similar to most of the larger town Erie stations, such as Kent OH, or Port Jervis. It was razed shortly after CR was formed in 1976. The freight house still stands, seen beyond the Chenango St bridge. At this time in 1991, there were still offices in the building, but it too would meet the wrecking ball in the late 90s.
