Run Around
Title:  Run Around
Description:  The power, now an ex PC GP 35 instead of the more familiar EL unit, on this local on the NJ & NY runs around its train at Moonachie. At the time, there was no mid day passenger service on the line, and the freights had the place to themselves til late afternoon.

NJ&NY local
Title:  NJ&NY local
Description:  The New Jersey & New York line from Jersey City to Spring Valley, now known as the NJ Transit Pascack Valley Line, hosts a fair amount of freight traffic. Here we see an ex PC GP 35 working at Moonachie, with an ex PRR caboose, still a common feature on trains in that era.

Title:  GP 30 at Croxton
Description:  After CR took over, power started to show up everywhere on lines that did not previously see it. Here we see a GP 30 at Croxton on the ex EL, a line that never owned the model.

Dewitt Geep
Title:  Dewitt Geep
Description:  An RS 3 rebuilt at Dewitt shop in Syracuse works the ex Erie Croxton yard, pulling a cut of cars over County Rd. This switch didn't do so well. Look at the lead truck on the box car. Oh well. Some days things just don't go right.

RS 3 rebuild
Title:  RS 3 rebuild
Description:  Conrail early on did a rebuild program for RS 3s where they took old EMD 567 engines, primarily from E units, rebuilt them and installed them in RS 3 bodies, eventually totalling 100 units. Here one of them pulls a cut of cars at County Road crossing at Croxton Yard. In about two more minutes, the Southern boxcar behind the unit would derail.

Oops
Title:  Oops
Description:  The cut of cars that CR 9943 was pulling across County Rd had a small problem. The Southern box car right behind the engine picked a switch and wound up spread over two tracks. They had another yard engine pull the rest of the train back into the yard, and commenced tryng to rerail the box, but an hour later, they were still having at it, since it did not seem to want to get back up on the rails. Just another day at the office!!

Working at Croxton
Title:  Working at Croxton
Description:  The early years saw activity at a number of yards that would ultimately see downgrades or elimination. The Erie Lackawanna was not an important part of the final CR plan, and much of it was abandoned on the west end. Even the east end saw drastic reductions in traffid, though in 1980 it was still possible to see some activity at Croxton, once ELs main New Jersey terminal, though most traffic had shifted to Oak Island

Lucky catch
Title:  Lucky catch
Description:  I rode the connecting train from Suffern to Port Jervis to get the miles over the Graham Line this cold day in 1984. When I got to PO, OIBU was there waiting on a crew change. Just lucky, considering all the times Id been there and not seen a road train. As usual, the sun is elusive.

Description:  Locals on the Tier for quite a few years got GP38s, though at times B23s could also be found. This local at Campbell Hall on the ex Erie Graham Line is truc to form, assigned 8125, seen at the old Campbell Hall station, the strip of blacktop that existed prior to the fancy station they have now. Description:  BUOI passes the famous Erie Starrucca House in Susquehanna PA. It was restored in the mid 80s after falling into disrepair after EL quit. It was a restaurant(and a good one) at various times following the restoration. The train will be on Starrucca Viaduct, in nearby Lanesboro, in five minutes.

Jeff Junction
Title:  Jeff Junction
Description:  TV 303 has just crossed Starrucca Viaduct and is now at CP Lanesboro, the location of Jefferson Jct, where the Erie had a line connecting to the D&H Penn Division. It has been only recently taken up as it was used to access the part of the D&H still in place while the Belden Hill project enlarged the tunnel. The right of way is now hidden under the snowpack to the right of the tall pole to the right of the train, never to see a passing train again.

Treed in
Title:  Treed in
Description:  I have a shot here of TV 301 in the winter, which is much wider open. The trees with leaves really close in the shot, though in this colorful time of year, ill take it. The train is about to pass under PA 191 as it makes its way toward NY state.

Colorful scene
Title:  Colorful scene
Description:  Mid Octover is the time to see the Southern Tier, as the leaves usually peak some time in the middle of the month. This was a typical year, as we see TV 301 rolling west from the overpass just off I 81 exit 1.

Classic color
Title:  Classic color
Description:  The tree, of course. New England has nothing on NY and PA when it comes to fall color, as this flaming orange maple shows. CR blue adds to the scene as TV 301 crosses Starrucca Viaduct

Hiding out in Hillburn
Title:  Hiding out in Hillburn
Description:  BUOI is working the Hillburn yard, just west of Suffern on the former Erie, just 31 miles from Jersey City. The third unit, 6640 shares a number with an ex BN F45 on the NYSW. I saw both within a couple of weeks of each other. Never caught them at the same time, though.

Work train
Title:  Work train
Description:  A work train is waiting out the weekend on the siding at Callicoon. There were still quite a few U23Bs in service at that time, and it was common to see them doing every kind of work. The EL hopper head out is a nice touch.
