Album Info:Photos taken at Bellerose NY on the LIRR. I was the organist for the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Jamaica for several years. After church on Sunday, I'd usually spend an hour or so at Bellerose, since there were a group of diesel trains that ran mid day, as well as the occasional freight. I went other times as well, as it was a good spot to see Main Line action at the east end of Queens interlocking, and the lighting was good most of the day.

Title:  4012 rolls east
Description:  The mid day weekend Montauk train was 4012. Saturdays train was nothing special, but Sundays moved the parlors that would bring the weekenders home back to Montauk after servicing in Jamaica, and was usually a long train, 12-14 cars, and got a pair of GP 38s. Huntington train
Title:  Huntington train

Belmont special
Title:  Belmont special
Description:  There are a number of race tracks in the New York area, two of them directly served by rail. One is Aqueduct, on the IND A train, and has its own station on the Rockaway Line, which was, prior to 1954, the LIRR. The other Belmont Park, home of Triple Crown even Belmont Stakes. The Long Island had a station on a spur off the Main Line at Queens interlocking, enabling trains to access the station there. This view is from the Bellerose station, looking west, as a train of M 1s takes the switch to the spur.

Back to the city
Title:  Back to the city
Description:  Getting trains into the Belmont spur was a simple process. A train was run out track 4 from Hall tower at Jamaica, and lined down the spur. One switch and done. Getting a train off the spur was another matter, since a train had to be crossed over the entire plant to get to track 1, though sometimes trains would use inside track 3 to Jamaica. This westbound has the whole place blocked as it makes its move through Queens.

4012
Title:  4012
Description:  I was church organist at a church in Jamaica for several years in the mid 80s. I got done around noon, and if I hustled, I had enough time to get to Bellerose for the mid day parade. One of my favorite targets was train 4012, which in the summer had a swelled consist due to it being used as a deadhead move for freshlly serviced parlor cars. Youll see a lot of it. I probably saw every GP 38 LIRR had on it over several years.

Montauk train
Title:  Montauk train
Description:  My Sunday routine was to go to Bellerose on the Main Line in the early afternoon. Bellerose was a great viewing platform, as it was an island platform on the Hempstead branch, with a good view of the main and the signals at the east end of Queens interlocking. Id arrive usually around 1215, and catch a Montauk train, a Ronkonkoma train and a couple of Oyster Bay trains, and if I was lucky, a freight behind Alcos over the next couple of hours. The Montauk train, 4012, usually had a pair of GP 38s leading. This day is true to form, with 260 leading a typically long train through Queens interlocking and out the Main Line.

Port Jeff surprise
Title:  Port Jeff surprise
Description:  The MP 15 trailing this eastbound Port Jefferson train was not unusual. The GP 38 was. Must have been a power swap, and the GP was tacked on before the train left Jamaica. Interestingly, the two trailing units are the highest numbered in their respective classes. The 277 is named for LIRR president Walter Schlager.
