UP 5696
Title:  UP 5696
Description:  UP 5696 rounding out the power-trio hauling north on a mixed freight under almost painfully blue skies (rather rare around here, even when its not raining and clear because to get blue, clear skies we have to avoid our infamous "temperature inversion" which holds all the smoke (from the wildfires and range fires to the east, southeast, and south) plus Portland smog next to the ground giving a more white appearance to our skies.

Description:  UP 8473 middle of three on northbound mixed freight (and quite the mix at that - running the gambit from refers to likely MOW section tailed by autoracks - a hodge-podge of routing nightmare for the yardmaster of the evening and likely to elicit, "Come on, this would never happen in real life."

Title:  AMTK 465
Description:  AMTK 465 accelerating quickly into the exit straight-away out of the Vancouver Amtrak station and into what has to be a weird experience shooting down a channel of freight cars, followed a few moments later by the shock of shooting out from between them into open track.

BNSF 3822
Title:  BNSF 3822
Description:  BNSF 3822 in third and last position with nose smashed against those outlandishly tall tunnel-buster covered specialty flats... giving somewhat added meaning to the saying, "Unless youre the lead sled dog, the scenery never changes." (which leads to the dog joke, "Yeah, talk about a bad day - had to follow some a-hole for six hours straight...")

Description:  BNSF 4327 three of five on northbound mixed freight holding behind the signal riser in Vancouver as the sun continues to brighten. (Thanks to Sir Richards, of Gary Minor, for catching my slip-dexic mis-read on unit ID (previousyl called BNSF 4372 - oops!))

BNSF 5240
Title:  BNSF 5240
Description:  BNSF 5240 at the front of an impressive northbound lash-up of horsepower with five units on a rather unimpressive mixed freight... unless this is part of that physics law about equal-and-opposite action to ensure the universe doesnt fall apart with the UP over-kill going south.

BNSF 5269
Title:  BNSF 5269
Description:  BNSF 5269 second from the north and proving challenging shooting into the sun thats chosen now to burn through the clouds since Im on the opposite side of the tracks from the earlier shots back in the service area (other folder) - combined with chain-link and other complaints from me, not only wasnt I able to get a shot down the line-up (not that they werent doing their best to hide behind the new enlarged signal tree upper north yard), but Im also managing to wade through various weeds and sticker bushes along the fence to keep photographers out (just kidding - I know the fence is there for a reason - but Im still having to get used to the difference between Southern and Northwestern approaches to protecting the tracks ("Hey, yall - you go on the tracks, yer gonna die. So keep off, cause we cant slow down or swerve - you hear?" vs "... so the jury would believe you only put up an eight foot fence with hurricane wire top and expect it would keep said injured or maimed individual off the track? Yet, did anyone actually consult personally with said, poor, injured and/or dead person after they climbed over that pitiful excuse of a fence that some big, bad, evil corporation felt was enough notice that large, heavy trains cannot stop on a dime to avoid people trespassing? Let the jury know, they now have whats called steerable trucks on trains - which can only mean, had the engineer been driving such a train, he couldve swerved to avoid the poor, sad, unwarned injured and/or dead person that chose to lay down upon the tracks after climbing said fence and avoiding rail police - yet, the evil corporation decided not to spend the extra money to provide that safety feature...")

Title:  UP 4980
Description:  UP 4980 filling the fourth and final slot on southbound mixed freight duty through Vancouver, looking off into the hazy hills leading out of Portland/St Johns/St Helens (the "city of" which is in Oregon - not to be confused with the Washington volcano/mountain which is not really even close in vicinity, so you sort of have to wonder).

BNSF 3777
Title:  BNSF 3777
Description:  BNSF 3777 third on southbound covered hopper work - and speak of the devil, partially blocked by the round-table upper catwalk. I know everything changes, but it still looks odd to see ET44C4 instead of "ES" - dang, Im getting old(er). (gotta love it when the better-half chooses *now* to help look over and edit my text. BNSF 8233
Title:  BNSF 8233
Description:  BNSF 8233 middle of three headed south with covered hopper group... and youd think if you were going to put a power/light pole in the middle of the frame, the least you could do was make it 90° vertical (as if there arent enough non-horizontal lines and angles all through this section of track with the new guardrails and such, the round table poles are tilted... fine, sure, I know, we have an active table by an over-pass accessible to people and Im complaining - speaking of which, later in the month I finally caught it in action. For those having not been first-person present, uh, dont splurge on the sound equipped tables, its a bit of a letdown. I wont spoil that entry just yet, but look for the details! Coming soon to a RRPA - place your pre-order...)

Title:  PNWR 2312
Description:  PNWR 2312 now in the lead... and squashing my enthusiasm that we got a new yellow-bonnet yard girl: even though from this angle it looks like ATSF/BNSF scheme, its really PNWR. Darn. Eh, its a picture of switches/points/turn-outs.

UP 5047
Title:  UP 5047
Description:  UP 5047 as three of four on southbound mixed freight in an odd shooting location (warranting a bit of stink-eye from the beloved who doesnt seem to believe this small section of paved asphalt is public right of way - although I might take my chances with the local law enforcement as the less of two evils - either way, Im shooting fast with only a couple frames down here shooting between the hedges).

Description:  UP 2599 at the front of a northbound double-header double-stack double-timing it north toward the port of Seattle-Tacoma and the bankruptcy blues that has become the aquatic shipping industry. Anyone know if one or three of the container industry group recently changed their livery? (Referring to Rock Islands classic "Bankruptcy Blue" color scheme - in case Im being a little too subtle... especially in reference to the UP in this image whose parent company holds the RI copyright, I believe.)

UP 8668 - UP 5670 - BNSF 9252
Title:  UP 8668 - UP 5670 - BNSF 9252
Description:  UP 8668 - UP 5670 - BNSF 9252 with southbound autorack paused in the passing lane in Vancouver... and after seeing BNSF rigs out in the desolate stretches of northeastern Oregon earlier in the day, something odd is going on. You have to look no further than the trees in the background - theres leaves on them... and theyre not green (sounds like a joke, but we *used* to go from trees with green leaves to trees stripped bare (high winds with coming of fall) or the early freeze that just kills things - green to dead & brown... THEN the wind stripped them off. "Beware the four horsemen..." hey, wait a second... there were four lone BNSF units out in UP territory... guess its a good thing were on our way to services.
