Album Info:The Burlington Northern album I originally created on this site got too large for me to search quickly when new information surfaced, so I'm creating this album to move my earlier posted photos of end cab switchers for my convenience in editing.

Number ET-1 was built by Baldwin in April 1942 as Northern Pacific Railway VO-660 130 ( c/n 64246 ), renumbered to NP 652 in 1956, converted to Electric Trailer ET-1 by the NP South Tacoma Shops in February 1959, became BN ET-1 sometime after March 2, 1970, retired February 22, 1988, sold to Azcon Corporation in June 1988.

Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad ET-2 at Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 23, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The assigned master unit was SW1200 179, built in March 1955 as NP 120 ( c/n 29329 ). This Electric Trailer (ET-2) was originally Northern Pacific Baldwin VO-660 128, built in May 1940 ( c/n 62392 ), renumbered to NP 650 in 1956, converted in May 1960 by the NP South Tacoma Shops to Electric Trailer ET-2, became BN ET-2 sometime after March 2, 1970, retired February 22, 1988, retired February 22, 1988, sold to Azcon Corporation in June 1988.

Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad NW-12 5 at Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 23, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5 was built by EMC as GN NW2 5306 in March 1939 (c/n 865) on Order E219, was renumbered to GN 106, after the merger it became BN 454. According to the 1977-80 Burlington Northern Annual (© 1981 Motive Power Services) it was rebuilt at West Burlington, Iowa and released April 9, 1975 as NW2u 5. A total of four former GN NW2's were rebuilt before the Comprehensive Locomotive Rebuild Program (CLRP) was terminated on August 1, 1975, with the fourth rebuild (19, ex-BN 469) still on the floor. It was finished and released almost a year later.

Built in January 1951 as SLSF SW7 302 (c/n 10184) on EMD Order 4028, it became BN 77 (2nd). It is listed as retired in February 1987, but apparently stayed around a bit longer. The frame is stencilled for maintenance at Springfield (MO) and Birmingham AL.

Built in February 1941 as CB&Q SW1 9153 (c/n 1285) on EMD Order E375, most of its CB&Q career was spent as the Aurora (Illinois) depot switcher. It was retired by the BN in August 1983 (although it may have been out of service earlier, note the capped stack), later becoming ILSX 1366. I'm no expert, but it looks to me like an oil leak sidelined this locomotive.

I cannot explain the Flexicoil trucks, modified headlight, or the exhaust stacks (yet) and I'm still trying to figure out when EMD introduced the Flexicoil switcher truck. Built in May 1951 as GN SW9 21 (c/n 13301) on EMD Order 4088, it became BN 153 and was retired in April 1984. Note the Flexicoil trucks, ordered by the GN to permit higher road speed. Also note it was stenciled as a SW7.

Number ET-1 was built in April 1942 as a Baldwin VO-660, NP road number 130 (c/n 64246), converted to Electric Trailer ET-1 at the NP's South Tacoma Shops in February 1959. It was retired by the BN on February 22, 1988 and sold to Azcon Corp. in June 1988.

About a half hour before this photo was shot, a road freight arrived that was too long for the arrival track. This forced that train to pull through the east end of that track, part the train and pull forward some more to clear the switch, allowing that half olf train to back into an adjacent empty track. While backing up one boxcar picked the switch and this is the result. See also BN SD40-2 8016 on this site.
