LIRR Coach on the End of Tr#18, The Cannonball
Title:  LIRR Coach on the End of Tr#18, The Cannonball
Description:  For head end of this train see: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1567502 John Deasy emailed me: The coach on the rear of LIRR train 18 The Cannonball at Westhampton is one of the sixty seat chair cars LIRR acquired from Kansas City Southern in 1968 to replace old coaches such as the "pong" cars. The various spotting features, particularly the outside swing-hanger trucks, indicate this was one of the cars built by ACF in 1956 for KCS.

LIRR South Shore
Title:  LIRR South Shore
Description:  Tim Darnell emailed me that this is an ex-PRR heavyweight parlor, now at the Cincinatti Museum in Covington, KY. John Deasy added: SOUTH SHORE, the commuter club car you photographed laying over at Speonk, was indeed a former Pullman heavyweight 12 section 1 drawing room sleeper which LIRR acquired from PRR circa 1957. I don't know if the conversion from sleeper to commuter club car was done before or after LIRR acquired the car from PRR.

Today this car, privately owned, is sitting semi-derelict in Romney WV on the South Branch Valley RR, a former B&O branchline.

CTA 4000s Cab
Title:  CTA 4000s Cab
Description:  Exact day of month not recorded. The motorman's cab of a CTA 4000 series car. He has but two controls. In his right hand is the handle for the power, which he notched up. It changes the way the four motors (one for each axle) are wired together, i.e., how many in series and how many in parallel. If he sets it for all motors in series the voltage is divided equally between all four and the train moves slowly. If he moves the controller all the way up so all motors are in parallel, each motor sees the full voltage and the car accelerated to its maximum speed. The handle of the controller is removable and he takes it with him whenever he leaves the car so no one else can move the car. In his left hand is the air brake lever. If to have ever stood near an electric traction vehicle you have no doubt heard the air pumps come on and off. He also can blow the horn and turn on the windshield wiper, but not much else. Simplicity! For a picture of the exterior of a CTA 4000 series car see: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1403702
