Description:  CN local crosses the former C&NW swing bridge and passes Kaukauna Lock No. 2 on the Fox River Navigation Canal as it descends the grade from the main line down to the banks of the Fox River at Kaukauna, WI on 3 Jan '17. The Warren pony truss bridge was built in 1893, according to http://bridgehunter.com. Train was preparing to service Expera Specialty Solutions, partially visible in the background. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, this Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers).

Description:  CN local crosses Millview Dr. as it approaches the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jan. '17. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen on Millview Dr. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood background left, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. A large pile of broken concrete is about all that remains and will soon be removed and recycled. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill stood to the right for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, Neenah, WI 54956, and Affinity clinic at 101 Main St. occupy the sight of the old paper mill.

Description:  CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 24 Jan. '17. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, a periodic rail customer, is partially visible behind the train. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22. Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Description:  CN local momentarily fouls Thilmany Rd. while servicing the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill on the banks of the Fox River via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 27 Jan. '17. It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter. Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the restoration of the original Thilmany mill (out of frame to the right) and the creation of its new parking lot.

Title:  GTW 5850
Description:  A CN local shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 May ‘18. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., stands at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It is commonly referred to as the Hiram Smith Octagon House; Hiram purchased it from his brother Edward at some point. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The powers-that-be wanted to demolish it to make way for the over-priced and over-budget Main St. overpass (out of frame to left). Thankfully there were enough intelligent people around to save it. Some references claim that the historic structure was not moved, but that the overpass design was modified to accommodate it. Other references state that the house was moved, including an article from the local newspaper on 15 Apr. ‘98 which stated, “federal rail safety funds will cover 90% of the additional $200,000 needed to move the historic Octagon House, 336 Main St., about 500 feet east to the corner of Smith and Torrey streets.” If it was moved, it wasn’t moved quite that far. The process of trying to move the house dragged on for at least 3 years. An article in the local newspaper on 18 Oct. ’01 stated that the relocation was still going to happen, but the estimated cost to move it had tripled by that point. Regardless of whether it was moved or remains at its original site, I’m just glad that it was saved.

Description:  A CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches N. State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 14 Oct. '18. There are two milepost markers, a newer one on a fence post next to the telephone pole, and an older one halfway up the telephone pole. The large brick building partially visible above the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 May '19. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Title:  GTW 5850 and CN 9486
Description:  A CN local crosses N. State St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 8 Jun. '19. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) was installed last year as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The parking lot of the historic Flanagan's Stop & Shop is partially visible to the right, if you appreciate an excellent selection of liquor, beer, and wine. As I pulled into their parking lot, I heard a horn signaling the approach of this train. I was forced to photograph the train before going into the store to make my beer selection.

IC 3110 and GTW 5850
Title:  IC 3110 and GTW 5850
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Jun. '19. The interesting brick building behind the train is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. It was built between 1895 and ‘01 by the Marshall Paper Co. (a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper); founded in ‘93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall (father and son). It initially operated across Richmond St. at the Marshall & Hammel grain facility (Simon was a partner in that company) until the current building was completed. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also served the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse, which stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service Fountain Lumber Co. (J. Fountain Lumber Co.), 129 N. State St., founded by John Fountain in 1897. Louis J. Marshall, the last surviving brother, sold the company when he retired in 1942. The facility was used for a warehouse by Kimberly-Clark (K-C) from at least ‘45 to at least ‘60. It was home to Appleton Furniture Mart ca. ‘74 to ‘77. Baxter’s Beef and Pizza Co. opened here in ‘77. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

GTW 5850 and IC 3110
Title:  GTW 5850 and IC 3110
Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it sets out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 23 Jun. '19. After finishing here, train headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible at right. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

GTW 5850
Title:  GTW 5850
Description:  A CN local passes the depot/yard office as it sets out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 23 Jun. '19. After finishing here, train headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. Train had two locomotives, GTW 5850 and IC 3110. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks (under GTW 5850’s fuel tank), from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW.
