Title:  N&W 2-8-8-2 #2156 - Norfolk & Western
Description:  According to the back of the photo, this was taken at Schaeffer's Crossing in Roanoke, VA - one heavy traffic area! Built by the N&W shops in 1942 as a class Y, this is an example of a true Mallet with both articulation and compound expansion (high & low pressure cylinder configuration). The locomotive had 57” drivers, developed a whopping 300 psi boiler pressure and a total tractive effort of 126,831 lb. Sadly, these brutes were all retired by April, 1960.

Description:  Norfolk & Western Y6a 2-8-8-2 at the National Museum of Transportation at St. Louis, MO. This is a compound articulated meaning the front cylinders are larger and use the steam exhausted from the higher pressure rear cylinders. But they could also run all cylinders high pressure for starting but would switch to compound at around 5 mph.
